The situation is even more worrying as Dr Ripoll warns that the worst may yet come: “This is an overuse injury. When winter comes, the pitch is wet and slippery, forcing players to use more strength to maintain balance. If left unchecked, it can lead to a sports hernia and require surgery.”

Barcelona are currently opting for conservative treatment, limiting surgery to help Yamal recover naturally. But clearly, the 18-year-old has yet to return to the form that once amazed Europe. He has been on the field, but what fans see is no longer the explosive and fierce Lamine Yamal of before.
