According to VNA Special Envoy, on October 29 (local time), within the framework of his official visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, General Secretary To Lam had a meeting with Speaker of the British House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle at Westminster Palace in London.
General Secretary To Lam affirmed that the Party, State and National Assembly of Vietnam always attach importance to developing the traditional friendship with the UK, in which the parliamentary channel plays a practical role in promoting and supervising the implementation of intergovernmental agreements, while deepening understanding and trust between the two countries.
The General Secretary asked the British House of Commons to continue to pay attention to, support and urge the effective implementation of cooperation agreements between the two governments, including the Vietnam-UK Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), cooperation programs in education and training, scientific research, innovation and human resource development; and continue to allocate resources for development cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the fields of clean energy, climate change response and public health.
Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle emphasized the desire for the two countries to join hands to build the future and the House of Commons supports the British Government in strengthening cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the UK's strong fields such as education and training, healthcare, climate change response and the desire to increase people-to-people exchanges.
The two leaders agreed to continue strengthening cooperation between the two National Assemblies through maintaining regular exchanges of delegations at all levels, especially high-level ones; establishing friendship parliamentary groups and promoting exchanges between specialized committees; promoting the exchange of legislative experiences, perfecting the legal framework, and creating favorable conditions for expanding bilateral cooperation.
Regarding the East Sea issue, General Secretary To Lam asked the British Parliament to continue to maintain an objective and balanced stance, supporting the viewpoint of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in resolving disputes by peaceful means, on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea./.
