Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung has just signed a decision to announce the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Accordingly, “Folk Performing Arts, Folk Knowledge of Vovinam - Viet Vo Dao of Ho Chi Minh City” has been officially included in the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Decision also assigns the Chairmen of People's Committees at all levels, where there are intangible cultural heritages included in the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritages "Folk Performing Arts, Folk Knowledge of Vovinam - Viet Vo Dao of Ho Chi Minh City," within the scope of their duties and powers, to carry out state management in accordance with the provisions of law on cultural heritage.

Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assigned the Department of Culture and Sports to coordinate with the City Vovinam Federation to complete the scientific dossier on the intangible cultural heritage of Viet Vo Dao.

Viet Vo Dao is a traditional martial art of the Vietnamese people founded by the late martial artist Nguyen Loc in 1938 in Hanoi. Later, this martial art was called Vovinam and consisted of 2 parts: Vietnamese Martial Arts (Viet Vo Thuat) and Vietnamese Martial Arts (Viet Vo Dao).

In 1960, the late master Le Sang took over the position of Head of the School, continuing his career of promoting and developing Vovinam. He and other masters researched and studied to perfect the system of theory, techniques and martial arts, thereby building a solid foundation for Vietnamese martial arts.

The Council of Grand Masters of Vovinam was established in 2010, marking a new milestone for Vietnamese martial arts. The late Grand Master Nguyen Van Chieu and other masters strongly spread Vovinam to international friends around the world.

With a system of national, scientific, practical, creative techniques along with a martial philosophy, Vovinam - Viet Vo Dao has contributed to introducing the country and people of Vietnam to the international community.

The establishment of the World Vovinam Federation in 2008 created a turning point for the development of the global Vovinam movement, when Vovinam Federations of continents were established in Asia, Europe, Africa...

Since then, the international competition system such as continental championships and world championships has been held regularly and has been increasingly improved in quantity and quality. Up to now, Vovinam has been present in more than 70 countries and territories around the world, attracting more than 2.5 million martial artists to practice.

Mr. Mai Huu Tin, President of the World Vovinam Federation and President of the Vietnam Vovinam Federation, shared that Vovinam being recognized as a national Intangible Cultural Heritage is the result of many generations in the 85-year process of formation and development of the sect. This is a necessary step towards making Vovinam a world Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In Vietnam, the Federation will develop Vovinam in all 63 provinces and cities and promote the Vovinam movement in schools as well as improve the quantity and quality of martial arts students.

Another goal that the Federation is determined to achieve is to build a Vovinam Academy, planned to be located in Ho Chi Minh City, which promises to be a place to train Vovinam not only for Vietnam but also for countries around the world.

The 7th World Vovinam Championship 2023 is scheduled to take place from November 22 to 30 at Phu Tho Stadium (Ho Chi Minh City). Currently, the tournament has more than 650 athletes, coaches, team leaders and referees from 35 countries and territories registered to participate.
