Vu Hoang Tuan tells stories through... blank spaces

The exhibition "Drifting Away" by Vu Hoang Tuan (from June 15 to 21, at Maii Gallery - 72/7 Tran Quoc Toan, District 3, HCMC) brings a whisper, or perhaps a leisurely sigh, of the artist in the midst of the bustling human world.

Vu Hoang Tuan's paintings are like a dream that is both old and strange. He paints simply, with only a few blocks of color and a few square and round lines, but the more you look at it, the more you feel moved. Whether it is a yellow sand dune by the sea, a boat nestled in the shadow of a rocky mountain, or a lonely watchtower in the middle of a blue sea and sky - all of them faintly contain the breath of the Central South - where the sun burns the skin, the wind whips the face and the people are as gentle as the earth.

Vu Hoang Tuan does not tell the story in detail, but with… blank spaces. Blank in the painting, but full in the heart. A shadow cast sideways. A person’s back turned away. A dog looking vaguely… No borders, no bright color combinations, just calm, natural, flat color blocks. It is that ultimate simplicity that reveals the unspeakable depth.
