Extensive communication
Child marriage was once a pressing issue in some remote villages and ethnic minority areas of Cam Hiep commune. Limited awareness among the people, persistent outdated customs, and difficulties in accessing education were the main causes of child marriage and consanguineous marriage. Recognizing this, Cam Hiep commune has implemented numerous awareness campaigns using a persistent approach, patiently persuading and explaining to the people the harmful effects of child marriage on children's health, future, and the quality of the gene pool.
In the villages, local authorities, in coordination with the Fatherland Front, Women's Union, and Youth Union, organized communication sessions at community centers, household groups, and village meetings, incorporating content on the Law on Marriage and Family along with stories and visual images about the consequences of child marriage and consanguineous marriage. Accordingly, community communication teams were established in Suoi Coc and Valy villages. In 2025, these two teams disseminated information on gender equality and the prevention of child marriage and consanguineous marriage to 80 girls and women's union members. Mr. Mang Tam, head of Suoi Coc village, said: “Ten years ago, there were still a few cases of child marriage in the village, but now, this situation has drastically decreased thanks to continuous propaganda reaching every household. In the last five years, only two cases of child marriage have been recorded. In these cases, the village People's Committee always goes to persuade and share knowledge so that the children understand and avoid having children early, which affects their health and physical well-being.”
In addition, every quarter and every month, the villages organize activities that include disseminating legal regulations and sharing real-life stories, helping young people understand their responsibilities before entering marriage.
Towards the goal of eliminating child marriage.
Thanks to coordinated efforts ranging from propaganda and management to mobilization and persuasion, many villages have significantly reduced the number of child marriage cases; in some places, no new cases have been recorded for many years. Young people have a better understanding of reproductive health and pre-marital responsibilities; many continue their education to complete high school or pursue vocational training, instead of getting married too early. Mang Hue, a 15-year-old from Valy village, shared: “Through participating in village activities, I have clearly understood the harmful effects of consanguineous marriage and child marriage. My group of friends and I have decided that after graduating from high school, we will pursue vocational training to support ourselves. We will only get married at the appropriate age to have healthy children.”
In addition to the solutions mentioned above, activities such as providing loan support, career guidance for young people, and caring for disadvantaged children have been promoted in Cam Hiep commune. This contributes to helping local youth have clear life goals and orientations, reducing the risk of child marriage. Ms. Ho Thi Thuy, Head of the Culture and Social Affairs Department of Cam Hiep commune, affirmed: “When people's living standards improve, their awareness changes, combined with the active involvement of the political system, the work of preventing and combating child marriage and consanguineous marriage will maintain its effectiveness in the long term.”
In the coming period, Cam Hiep commune will continue to maintain effective models, expand in-depth communication programs to youth groups; strengthen inspection and supervision, especially focusing on the "going door-to-door, meeting each person" approach, promptly handling or reporting when high-risk cases arise. Along with that, the synchronized coordination between the government, mass organizations, schools, families, and the community continues to be identified as the key to building a healthy, knowledgeable younger generation, contributing to sustainable socio -economic development and improving the quality of the population.
