On the afternoon of November 15, Mr. Ho Xuan Quang, Phu Van village, Go Noi commune, was absent-mindedly looking at a piece of land belonging to his family that was covered with sand more than half a meter deep. In previous years, Phu Van village occasionally had big floods, but never in a year was the sand as thick as the recent flood.
This season, Mr. Quang's family plans to grow chili and melons, but with the huge amount of sand being deposited like it is now, the risk of abandoning the land seems inevitable, meaning Mr. Quang's family's livelihood will be affected.
Not far away, nearly 2 sao of land (one sao is equivalent to 500m²) of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Kim Hoa's family (Phu Van village) was also buried deep under sand.
According to Ms. Hoa, with the current thick layer of sand, it is impossible to plant anything. These days, instead of cleaning and plowing the land to prepare for planting like every year, she goes to the field to collect firewood and branches scattered on the ground to bring home to save for cooking.

Go Noi commune was formed from the merger of three communes: Dien Phong, Dien Trung and Dien Quang. During the recent flood, most of the area along the Thu Bon river through Go Noi commune was covered by sand, an area of about 32 hectares with over 13.5 hectares of crops and vegetables submerged and damaged.
Among them, the three villages of Phu Van, Tan Binh and Go Dinh were most heavily silted up by sand. In addition, the flood caused landslides near Van Ly bridge, affecting thousands of square meters of adjacent cultivated land.
However, in addition to the buried sand, some places also benefit from floods due to the amount of silt that flows in. Ms. Luong Thi Lan, Xuan Ky village, Go Noi commune, said that her cultivated land has a lot of sand underneath, so every year when floods bring silt, that year the crops are good.
Ms. Lan's family has more than 2 sao of land along the Thu Bon River. She plans to grow peanuts in the near future. She expects the yield to increase because the alluvium this year is very thick.
According to Mr. Phung Hoang Viet, Chairman of the People's Committee of Go Noi Commune, although there are no specific figures, it is estimated that the amount of sand deposited in the commune is very large.
In recent days, the locality has conducted statistics on damage caused by floods, especially the amount of sand deposited on people's production land as well as on roads and residential areas.
On that basis, the commune will propose to the City People's Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Environment to have a policy to allow the exploitation of sand resources to create a local budget.
“The locality is surveying sand reserves, then will propose to the city a mechanism to allow the commune to exploit this material source. In the immediate future, it will help return the farming land to the people in time for production in the right season; at the same time, it is an opportunity for the commune to fully exploit the sand source, auction it to get money to reinvest in infrastructure and support people to restore production and farming,” Mr. Phung Hoang Viet informed.
