On the afternoon of January 2, Mr. Pham Phu Ngoc, Director of the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center, said that the "ancient ship" wreck discovered on the Hoi An coast in Cam An Ward (Hoi An City, Quang Nam ) a few days ago had disappeared a few days after being discovered.
According to Mr. Ngoc, the reason the shipwreck disappeared was because in recent days the sea weather was rough, the waves were big, and the high tides were strong, causing a large amount of sand to bury the part of the ship that was protruding back into the sea.
"The shipwreck is still in the same position where it was previously discovered, but due to high tides, it was buried by sand. In addition, to determine the age of this shipwreck, it needs to be excavated," said Mr. Ngoc.
Part of a wooden shipwreck discovered floating on the surface of the sea in Hoi An has previously disappeared due to being buried by sand.
Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of Cam An Ward People's Committee, said that recently a working group from Quang Nam Provincial Museum came to survey and collect information about this wooden shipwreck to determine its age. However, due to bad weather in the past few days, with heavy rain and strong winds in the area, the shipwreck could not be salvaged for specific identification.
Previously, the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center reported the discovery of a shipwreck suspected to be an ancient ship and assets suspected to be antiques in the coastal area of Hoi An.
According to a report from the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center, on December 26, upon receiving a report of the discovery of suspected antiquities in the coastal area of Cam An Ward, they sent specialized staff to the scene for an initial survey.
It was determined that the area where the ship was found was located on the coast of Thinh My block (Cam An ward), inside the area of the emergency anti-erosion embankment project on Cua Dai beach.
However, at the time of the survey, the tide was high, so the surveyors could not determine the specific structure of the relic as well as the size of the wooden bars.
Observation of the current situation shows that there are many dark brown wooden bars protruding from the sea surface from 10 - 30 cm, arranged in the shape of a boat with a pointed end, measuring about 3 m wide and about 15 m long.
In the coastal area between Cam An and Cua Dai wards, people have recently discovered many pieces of ceramics of Chinese origin, commonly dating from the 17th - 18th century.
Therefore, the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center requests the Hoi An City People's Committee to promptly report to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam Province for handling measures. At the same time, direct relevant units to coordinate with Cua Dai Border Guard Station to strengthen patrols and protection to prevent illegal salvage activities.
Currently, the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Preservation Center is also coordinating with relevant units to continue verifying information about the ancient ship. Notably, Hoi An City assigned units to collect carbon isotope samples to determine the age of the ship suspected to be the ancient ship that was just discovered.
Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee, also said that this ship, believed to be an ancient ship, is a type of junk used to transport goods in the past, and this type of boat is more than 100 years old.
Currently, the city government has assigned the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center to research and specifically survey the structure of the ship to have a plan to salvage the newly discovered ship hull. If necessary, experts from the Institute of Archaeology will be invited to participate in the research.
As Thanh Nien reported, on the morning of December 26, local people discovered the frame of a wooden ship that looked like an ancient ship gradually emerging from the sand on the coast of Cam An Ward. The location where the ship was discovered was close to the coast, about 400 meters from the ward People's Committee headquarters.
