Building a workforce of young artists and stage actors

Việt NamViệt Nam01/11/2024

Flexibility in mechanisms, policies and treatment, creating conditions for young artists and actors to participate in competitions and stage festivals, are solutions for Thanh Hoa province's art units to build quality young human resources for the future.

Building a workforce of young artists and stage actors The play "Land and Sea" by Thanh Hoa Traditional Arts Theater with the participation of young artists and actors won the "Excellent Play" award and 2 individuals won the award for outstanding creative elements at the National Cheo Festival.

Thanh Hoa Traditional Arts Theater is one of the units that plays an important role in social life, especially in professional performance, artistic activities at large-scale political events at provincial and national levels, as well as preserving the values of traditional stage art.

Currently, Thanh Hoa Traditional Arts Theater has 68 staff, actors, and musicians, of which young artists account for 25%. In recent years, despite many difficulties, the theater has paid attention to the selection and training of young artists. This is the most important task in the theater's annual operations, as well as in all stages.

Director of the Han Van Hai Theater said: Compared to other types of theaters, the selection and training of young artists and actors of traditional art theaters is much more difficult. The reason is that traditional theater forms such as tuong, cheo, and cai luong have been greatly affected by changes in society and people's entertainment needs, especially from entertainment forms on digital platforms. Even today's youth are less interested in cheo, tuong, cai luong theater, or even traditional folk singing and dancing. These are challenges for traditional art theaters across the country in general and Thanh Hoa in particular. Moreover, traditional art units without a reasonable compensation mechanism will make it very difficult for formally trained, talented theater students to choose to "join" and stay long-term. This is also the reason leading to the "aging" of artists in traditional art troupes such as tuong, cheo, and cai luong today.

Currently, Thanh Hoa Traditional Arts Theater is making efforts to find and be flexible in implementing mechanisms to recruit and build a team of quality artists and actors. However, the number of young artists and actors selected can only be “counted on the fingers”, due to many shortcomings in the mechanism. Moreover, young artists and actors are also concerned and affected by the issue of “bread and butter”, so it will be more difficult to stay long-term without proper treatment.

Despite such difficulties, the Thanh Hoa Traditional Arts Theater has always been evaluated by the Department of Performing Arts, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (VH,TT&DL) as a unit that has done a good job in building and training young artists and actors. The proof is that from 2019 to 2024, the theater has participated in national theater competitions and festivals, especially for young artists. This is a task to "keep the fire" of passion for traditional theater arts for young people, to build a team of young actors, artists and musicians for the future. The theater's young artists have gradually become important nuclei in plays, art programs and at regional and national theater festivals and performances. Almost every year, the theater has artists and actors winning gold, silver, bronze medals and many titles for outstanding young artists and actors, including individual awards for actors, artists and musicians... This is considered an important foundation for the theater to successfully complete its annual tasks and work assigned by the province.

As an art unit of the province, Lam Son Dance and Drama Theater has more advantages in selecting and training artists and actors thanks to its special factors. Every year, the theater has to undertake a large amount of work from building art programs and performances such as drama, dance and music, musicals, children's theater, to undertaking major political events of the province, traditional festivals at the provincial level and in localities and units in the province. In addition, there are touring activities to serve the people and building programs and performances to participate in festivals, performances, national theater competitions...

To complete its mission, the theater constantly strengthens and improves the expertise of its actors and musicians, and always pays attention to building and training a young team. Director of the Theater Vu Trong Huynh said: Of the nearly 70 staff, artists, actors and musicians of the theater today, the young force (35 years old and under) accounts for more than 50%. As a special unit with contemporary art genres such as drama, opera, dance, children's theater, singing and dancing, folk songs, and theater, building and rejuvenating the team of artists and actors is a regular task. With the attention of the province and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in addition to the artists and actors who have been on the payroll, the theater has used its own funds from revenue sources to contract 15 people for 3 art troupes: singing and dancing, folk songs and drama, all of whom are young artists to meet the tasks, annual work and sudden events and activities when necessary.

Through discussions, the leaders of the three provincial art units, including the Provincial Cultural - Cinema Center, the Traditional Art Theater, and the Lam Son Dance and Drama Theater, all hope that the province and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will have a support mechanism in selecting and building a force of young artists and actors to meet the increasingly high demands for professional work. This is also an inevitable trend that many localities have been implementing.
