According to The Guardian , the incident occurred at around 3pm at the Barton Lane intersection, where the Bee Network bus number 100 crashed into the aqueduct on the Bridgewater Canal.
Police said the bus appeared to have deviated from its planned route and the driver failed to comply with height restriction signs, including ropes and signs.

The bus’s upper deck roof was torn off in the crash, causing one passenger to be thrown from the upper deck. Three victims, a 19-year-old woman and two men (one in his 20s and one in his 40s), were seriously injured.
In addition, 17 others were treated at the scene for injuries that were not life-threatening or caused permanent damage.

The bus driver, a man in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and has been released on bail pending investigation.
Greater Manchester Transport Commissioner Vernon Everitt said: “An urgent and immediate investigation into the circumstances of this incident is underway and we are working closely with Greater Manchester Police and the bus operator Stagecoach.
This is a heartbreaking situation for all involved and we would like to thank the emergency services for their quick response.”
Meanwhile, The Sun newspaper described the moment when the bus passed under the bridge and the roof was torn off, causing passengers to scream in panic.

A witness said he heard screams from the upper deck of the bus immediately after the collision. “I heard the sirens of ambulances. When I saw three of them coming, I knew something serious had happened,” he said.
I saw a woman waving at the paramedics . I went outside and saw the roof of the bus on the ground, next to a person being treated.”
Greater Manchester Police said they had cordoned off the area at the intersection of Barton Lane and Trafford Road, advising people to avoid the area while rescue and investigation work took place.
