Nguyen Trai High School (Lien Chieu Ward, Da Nang City) pioneered the implementation of flexible class placement early on, even before official guidelines from the Ministry. This opened up opportunities for students to study subjects that suit their abilities and interests, demonstrating the school's vision and proactive approach.
Sharing about the innovative approach this academic year, Mr. Phan Quoc Duy, Vice Principal of the school, emphasized: “The school has thoroughly researched educational trends in recent years, especially in the subject combination selection process of universities. This is an important step to help students develop their potential and prepare well for their future studies.”
Unlike previous years, starting in early April 2025, Nguyen Trai High School developed a more flexible enrollment and class placement plan. Instead of applying pre-set subject combinations, students can register for their favorite subjects according to their personal preferences.
To provide support, the school organizes counseling sessions for students and parents on how to choose subjects, the regulations for the high school graduation exam, and the university admission process.
In addition to compulsory subjects, students can choose from four elective subjects, registering for them in order of priority from 1 to 6. The class placement process is strictly implemented, ensuring both student rights and suitability to the school's resources.
This school year, with a target of 9 classes, the school has arranged 8 subject combinations, ensuring that each student studies the subjects they registered for, including both their first and second priority subjects. The study modules are formed based on 3 popular subjects and the priorities from 1 to 4 of the majority of students.
Some students are assigned to "separate subject" classes according to their preferences, with reasonable class sizes. Thanks to this new approach, the number of students requesting to transfer classes has decreased significantly compared to previous years.
Ms. Le Chi, mother of a 10th-grade student admitted to the school, shared: “Initially, I was concerned about how classes would be arranged according to my child's interests, but after receiving advice on how to choose subject combinations for university entrance exams, I felt more at ease.”
Hoang Minh, a 10th-grade student, said: “Being able to choose and study subjects based on my interests makes me enjoy and look forward to the new school year. Initially, I was a little worried about the class being too crowded or being assigned to the wrong subject combination, but the school provided clear guidance.”
In Da Nang, Le Quy Don Specialized High School has long organized classes by subject. However, for general public schools, organizing classes based on subject choices is still relatively new. Nguyen Trai High School has made efforts to change and boldly innovate to suit the trends of modern education.
However, organizing classes based on students' preferences also presents many challenges. Mr. Nguyen Duc Phuoc, the school principal, said that creating a timetable for multiple subject combinations is a complex task requiring meticulous planning.
In addition, the school must consider allocating teachers, facilities, and functional rooms to ensure uniform classroom sizes and avoid overloading teachers and students. Despite these difficulties, the school proactively implements solutions to ensure the quality of education.
Furthermore, Nguyen Trai School is one of the first public schools in Da Nang to implement a two-session-per-day learning schedule, in accordance with the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training, the City People's Committee, and the Department of Education and Training. Simultaneously, the school will continue to renovate classrooms and equipment to ensure favorable learning conditions and support flexible class scheduling and the implementation of a two-session learning schedule.
Thanks to thorough preparation and close cooperation with parents, Nguyen Trai High School is a pioneer in organizing subject-based classes, opening a new direction for public schools in Da Nang in the journey of educational reform.
With this pioneering step, schools not only create opportunities for students to study the subjects they love and maximize their individual potential, but also affirm innovation.
