Request Gia Dinh General Hospital to temporarily stop liposuction

Receiving a quick report from Military Hospital 175 about a case of serious complications after liposuction, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health requested Gia Dinh General Hospital to temporarily suspend liposuction surgery until the cause is clarified.

On the morning of May 18, Mr. Tang Chi Thuong - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that he had asked Gia Dinh General Hospital to temporarily stop performing liposuction because it caused serious complications for patients when performing liposuction here.

On May 12, Military Hospital 175 sent a dispatch to the Department of Health reporting a case of a patient experiencing serious complications after liposuction surgery transferred from Gia Dinh General Hospital.

Immediately afterwards, the Department of Health sent a team of experts to quickly assess the conditions to ensure patient safety during cosmetic surgery at Gia Dinh General Hospital.

The delegation noted that there are many issues that need to be clarified in infection control, treatment prescription, and patient care at this hospital.

Based on the initial assessment of the inspection team, the Department of Health has issued a document requesting the director of Gia Dinh General Hospital to temporarily suspend techniques related to liposuction.

At the same time, urgently review all conditions to ensure patient safety according to regulations, seriously implement the "Comprehensive care process for patients undergoing liposuction and abdominoplasty" issued by the Department of Health, and report corrective solutions to the Department and the Ministry of Health .

Gia Dinh General Hospital (address 425 - 427 - 429 No Trang Long, Ward 13, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) is a private hospital, belonging to Gia Dinh General Hospital Joint Stock Company, starting operation from 2023.

Previously, this hospital was fined by the Inspectorate of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health for violations in medical examination and treatment activities. Specifically: practitioners at this hospital did not register to practice medical examination and treatment according to the law; and advertised special products, goods, and services without having the content confirmed by a competent state agency before advertising according to regulations.

Will review and evaluate the care process for patients undergoing liposuction surgery

Regarding ensuring patient safety in implementing liposuction techniques, on January 7, 2025, the Department of Health issued the "Comprehensive care process for patients undergoing liposuction surgery" in Official Dispatch No. 236.

This is a detailed technical process that has been developed by experts from different specialties, including: surgery, anesthesia, resuscitation, cosmetic surgery, internal medicine, nursing, etc., in coordination with each stage that the patient must go through when indicated and having liposuction surgery.

Each step clearly states what needs to be done, who does it, how it is done, and predicts possible situations and solutions.

The Department of Health requires all medical examination and treatment facilities approved for the list of liposuction techniques to organize training and strictly implement this process.

After the hospital reports on the implementation of corrective measures, the department will organize an inspection team to re-evaluate the conditions for ensuring patient safety during surgery, and will send a written report to the Ministry of Health.
