Joshua Zirkzee is out of favor at MU. |
But after 90 disappointing minutes, two names received the "cold signal" from coach Ruben Amorim: Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo.
Manchester United were lackluster for much of the game. Both of their goals came from set pieces. The attack lacked creativity, the midfield was disjointed, and the defense lost focus at times. Yet Amorim only used two substitutions. He did not give Zirkzee and Mainoo a chance despite both warming up throughout the second half.
The decision was clear. Amorim did not believe they could turn the game around. The two young players sat on the sidelines and watched their teammates struggle. They knew they were no longer part of the Portuguese coach’s main plans.
If this was a tactical experiment, fans might have been forgiven. But Manchester United were not playing well that day. Keeping the same lineup only made Amorim’s silence a heavier message. It was a “vote of no confidence” for Zirkzee and Mainoo.
According to the British press, both are considering their futures. Zirkzee is of interest to many teams in Serie A and the Premier League. Mainoo wanted to leave on loan in the summer, but Amorim stopped him, saying that "the team needs him". Now, that reason is no longer convincing.
Manchester United hope to keep them until at least the end of January. The club will lose Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo when the Africa Cup of Nations starts. But that may not be the case. A young player who has not played will soon find another opportunity.
If they leave, Manchester United will have to sign a replacement. Amorim could avoid that by giving them more playing time, but his actions at the City Ground suggest he is not ready.
When trust is lost, the door is closed. For Zirkzee and Mainoo, the draw against Forest could be the beginning of an inevitable farewell.
