(CLO) Tunisian coast guard forces have recovered the bodies of 27 African migrants after two boats they were using to cross the Mediterranean sank off the coast, according to an announcement from the national defense force on Thursday.

The two boats were involved in an accident in the waters near the city of Sfax, a popular departure point for African migrants seeking to reach Europe.

Tunisian coast guard officials said they rescued 87 people from two distressed boats. These individuals were attempting to cross the sea in hopes of finding "a better life in Europe."

This incident adds to a series of tragedies involving migrants crossing the Mediterranean. Just last month, Tunisian coast guard forces recovered the bodies of around 30 migrants in two similar incidents when their boats sank while heading towards Europe.

Tunisia is facing an unprecedented migration crisis. The country has surpassed Libya to become the main departure point for both Tunisians and other Africans on their perilous journey to Europe.

According to international organizations, migration across the Mediterranean is increasing dramatically as many people seek to escape poverty, conflict, and political instability in their home countries. However, this journey is extremely dangerous, with thousands losing their lives each year due to shipwrecks or other accidents at sea.

The European Union (EU) has repeatedly called for cooperation with North African countries, including Tunisia, to manage migration. However, a lack of resources and policy disagreements among countries have hampered these efforts.

Human rights organizations are calling on the international community to provide urgent assistance to rescue migrants and address the root causes of migration, such as economic inequality and conflict.
