Chamomile tea is also rich in antioxidants, powerful compounds that may help reduce the risk of certain diseases. Chamomile tea also has a calming and relaxing effect, and many people use it to aid digestion and sleep.
May improve sleep
Chamomile has some unique properties that help improve the quality of sleep of the user.
Chamomile contains apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to certain cell receptors in the brain, which may promote sleepiness and reduce chronic insomnia.

One study in older adults found that supplementing with chamomile tea twice daily for four weeks significantly improved sleep quality.
While current research findings are promising, more research is needed to determine how effective chamomile tea is at improving sleep. However, drinking chamomile tea before bed is definitely something to try if you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.
May prevent certain types of cancer
The antioxidants found in chamomile tea have been shown to be linked to a reduced risk of certain types of cancer.
Chamomile contains the antioxidant apigenin. In studies, apigenin has been shown to fight cancer cells, especially breast cancer, digestive cancer, skin cancer, prostate cancer, and cervical cancer.
Additionally, a study in 537 people found that those who drank chamomile tea 2–6 times per week had a lower risk of thyroid cancer than those who did not.
Helps control blood sugar levels
Drinking chamomile tea can help lower blood sugar.
Drinking chamomile tea may prevent damage to pancreatic cells. A healthy pancreas is important because it produces insulin, the hormone responsible for transporting sugar from the blood into cells.
A study of 50 participants with diabetes found that drinking chamomile tea twice daily for four weeks was effective in supporting blood sugar control, blood lipid levels, and improving kidney function.
While chamomile tea cannot replace medication if you have diabetes, it can be a useful supplement in aiding in the management of your condition.
Good for the heart
Chamomile tea contains flavones, a group of antioxidants. Research suggests that flavonoids may improve heart health by reducing LDL, also known as “bad” cholesterol.
Another study found that people with diabetes who drank chamomile tea had reduced levels of triglycerides and LDL in their blood. However, more research is needed to prove the effectiveness of chamomile tea in improving heart health.
