On the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the Agent Orange/dioxin disaster in Vietnam, on the morning of August 10, the Ho Chi Minh City Association of Agent Orange Victims, Vietnam Television Center in Ho Chi Minh City, in collaboration with Dam Sen Cultural Park, organized a walking program "For Agent Orange victims".
Associate Professor, Dr., Senior Lecturer Nguyen Hong Son, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Association of Agent Orange Victims, delivered the opening speech.
The program was attended by former State leaders, leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City government, departments, branches, consulates general of many countries, businesses and a large number of city residents. For the past 18 years, the "For Agent Orange Victims" walk has been held annually to support victims affected by the Agent Orange disaster in Vietnam. The event has profound and practical humanitarian significance, contributing to the dissemination of information to the people of Ho Chi Minh City and the whole country about the consequences of war, and is an effective bridge connecting compassionate hearts for Agent Orange/dioxin victims.
The walk attracted more than 5,000 participants.
The war has ended more than 50 years ago, but its consequences are still present. Many Vietnamese families are still suffering from unhealed wounds, especially the pain caused by Agent Orange. 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed and from 1975 until now, nearly 1 million people have died, more than 3 million people are victims with great difficulty in traveling with countless tragedies.
The walking program took place enthusiastically and excitingly at Dam Sen Park.
Incomplete statistics show that the country currently has more than 850,000 second-generation victims, 350,000 third-generation victims, and about 500 fourth-generation victims. The material and spiritual lives of victims are still lacking, especially families with many generations of victims, victims with serious illnesses, frequent relapses, and children born with deformities, disabilities, and intellectual disabilities.
The cost of caring for and treating victims is enormous, while the identification of victims of Agent Orange/dioxin faces many difficulties, requiring documents, medical records, and related files.
Many businesses join the program with profound humanitarian meaning.
At the walking program, Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade ( VietinBank ) presented 20 savings books, each worth 10 million VND; PetroVietnam Gas Corporation (PV GAS) presented 20 savings books, each worth 10 million VND, to 40 families with Agent Orange victims in difficult circumstances. Mr. Kim Dae Jong, Chairman of the Korean International Association for Agent Orange Victims, presented gifts worth 94 million VND. The Organizing Committee also presented 20 gifts, each worth 1 million VND and 5 wheelchairs.
