5 tips for spending less in Singapore - the world's most expensive city.

VnExpressVnExpress15/01/2024

Eating at hawker stalls, sleeping in love hotels, drinking kopi, and partying at suburban beachfront bars are tips for saving money when traveling to Singapore.

The British weekly magazine The Economist published its annual ranking of the world's most expensive places to live in 2023 at the end of November last year. Singapore and Zurich shared the number one spot. Marielle Descalsota, who has lived in Singapore for 20 years, says there are still ways for travelers to explore this world's most expensive destination affordably. Here are some suggestions.

Eating at hawker centers

Hawker centers, or hawker centers, are popular destinations for both tourists and locals due to their affordable prices, delicious food, and hygienic practices. Most main courses cost no more than 5 SGD, such as chicken rice if you visit the Maxwell Hawker Center in Chinatown. If you visit Changi Village Hawker Center in the east of the country, the price drops to around 3 SGD.

Drink kopi instead of trendy coffee.

Instead of visiting fancy cafes to order an expensive latte or cappuccino that can cost up to 6 SGD, tourists can try kopi – Singaporean coffee, hand-roasted using 15 different brewing methods. Locals often start their day with kopi for 1.2 SGD.

If you stay away from the city center and tourist spots, you can also find a breakfast consisting of kopi, two slices of toast with coconut jam, and a soft-boiled egg for 3 SGD.

Skip the crowded beach bars and pubs full of tourists.

Many tourists flock to Sentosa, an offshore island famous for its upscale resorts, clubs, and bars. Food and drink prices are often very high. A bottle of beer here costs 16 SGD, four times the price at a convenience store.

Alternatively, visitors can party at Changi Beach Club in eastern Singapore. Stella Lounge, a local beach club, sells draft beer for around SGD 13. Visitors can also find many food and drink options under SGD 10 at various budget-friendly eateries.

Spend the night at love hotels.

Instead of spending money on luxury hotels, Marielle Descalsota suggests that tourists can book rooms at love hotels, where couples often rent rooms by the hour. She considers these to be "the best value for money in Singapore."

A room at Hotel 81 Chinatown, one of the well-known hotel chains, costs 95 SGD. Marielle rated it as "clean, spacious, centrally located" and noted that it had a private bathroom instead of a shared one like in budget hostels.

Visit free attractions.

Singapore has many popular but expensive attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore and the observation deck at Marina Bay Sands, with entrance fees of 62 and 32 SGD respectively.

In addition, visitors can visit free attractions such as Grilman Barracks, a contemporary art district housing many international galleries in Singapore, or the NUS Museum. Free outdoor concerts are often held at the Esplanade, the famous theater complex known as the "Durian Theatre".
