VnExpressVnExpress10/07/2023

Getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and choosing healthy snacks are ways to help diabetics curb their cravings.

People with diabetes often feel hungry, crave food, and are not satisfied after eating. This is a warning sign of ketoacidosis - a life-threatening complication caused by the body producing too much acid in the blood. Adopting a healthy diet helps people control blood sugar, while reducing cravings.

Distract yourself : Cravings often pass if you don’t think about them. When you feel hungry but it’s not time for a meal, try reading a book, playing some music, calling someone, or taking a walk around the house. These can help you temporarily forget about your hunger.

Eat foods rich in fiber, low in carbohydrates : Foods rich in fiber and low in healthy carbs help you stay full longer and avoid sudden spikes in blood sugar. Diabetics should eat foods rich in fiber such as strawberries, apples, pears, nuts, carrots, raspberries, avocados... Low-carb foods include eggs, chicken, beef, tuna, salmon...

Get enough sleep : People who are sleep deprived tend to get hungry faster. Not getting enough sleep changes brain function, leading to cravings for high-calorie foods. Getting enough sleep is good for your health, especially for people with diabetes. People can improve their sleep quality by creating a habit of going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, preparing a quiet, cool bedroom space...

Limit foods that cause cravings : You may feel less hungry if you don't see delicious foods in front of you. Diabetics should limit stimulating foods such as sweets, fatty foods, fast foods, packaged snacks...

Create balanced meals and snacks : Patients should eat according to a certain schedule. Divide main meals and snacks, balance the amount of protein, carbohydrates, fat and fiber in each meal. This way helps to consume more nutrients, stay full longer. People should choose healthy snacks such as popcorn, seaweed, dark chocolate, jelly with no or little sugar... for snacks.
