On average, each year, the amount of excavated rock and soil from the mining technology of TKV's open-pit coal mines is about 150 million m3 . After decades of exploitation, the amount of rock and soil waste in the Quang Ninh region has reached more than 1 billion m3 with an area of about 4,000 hectares. Part of this rock and soil volume is used to fill mining pits, improve waste layers, and restore the environment; the rest can be exploited, processed, and used as land leveling and construction materials.
Realizing the potential of the supply of waste rock and soil in the province and the increasing demand for construction materials such as sand and stone, since 2019, Indevco Group Joint Stock Company has researched and cooperated with many domestic and foreign partners to learn and select technology for screening and crushing mine waste rock and soil into construction materials.
Mr. Do Tien Dung, Chairman of the Board of Directors, General Director of Indevco Group Joint Stock Company said: The Company is currently in need of using about 3.6 million m3 to implement the project of producing materials from mine waste rock and soil. In recent years, the Company has researched technology and conducted field surveys in many countries such as India, Malaysia, Thailand... to learn and choose a model suitable for production conditions in Vietnam. The entire production line is expected to be designed as a closed system to minimize dust and noise; sludge filtration technology helps recover up to 95% of water, ensuring no sludge or water is discharged into the environment; a tubular conveyor transport system is also selected to minimize the impact on the surrounding area...
Not only Indevco Group Corporation, currently many enterprises inside and outside the province have the need to use mine waste rock and soil as filling materials for construction projects; as well as raw materials for the production of construction materials.
According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Truong, Deputy Director of Quang Ninh Coal Processing Joint Stock Company - the unit assigned by TKV to recover mine waste rock and soil, the Company has currently established the demand for 39 projects with a total demand for the period 2025-2028 of nearly 56 million m 3 , and by 2034 it is about 195 million m 3. In particular, the market for landfill materials has established a supply demand until 2034 for 35 projects in Quang Ninh province and neighboring provinces with a total volume of over 174 million m 3 .
Recently, the Company continued to organize a conference to unify the content of the groundbreaking of mine waste rock recovery and determine the progress volume of mine waste rock supply for projects in the period of 2025-2028 and after 2028; with the attention and participation of many enterprises inside and outside Quang Ninh province and related departments, branches and sectors.
At this conference, the Company provided information to customer businesses about the legal basis, licenses and approved volume of mine waste rock. Accordingly, the Company has been licensed to reclaim waste rock at the Nam Quang Loi dump of Coc Sau mine - Deo Nai Coal Joint Stock Company - Coc Sau TKV to use as fill material to supply to the LNG Power Plant Project of Quang Ninh LNG Power Joint Stock Company; completed the plan to submit for licensing for the plan to reclaim and use waste rock at the Suoi Lai mine dump - Hon Gai Coal Company and at Mao Khe mine area. In addition, the Company is also implementing procedures to review and submit for licensing for plans to reclaim and use mine waste rock as fill material at the Coc Sau mine dump, Ha Rang mine, and the dump of Vang Danh 2 Processing Plant.
In the coming time, TKV will continue to remove difficulties, plan the areas of exploitation, use and trading of mine waste rock in the mining and processing process belonging to the Group in Quang Ninh province until 2030 and forecast that after 2030, the total volume of mine waste rock that can be exploited and recovered will be about more than 633 million m³, an average of more than 70 million m3 /year. This will be an abundant source of filling materials as well as raw materials for the production of construction materials, effectively serving projects and works inside and outside Quang Ninh province.
