6 projects invested to ensure electricity for Can Tho city
Currently, the power transmission grid supplying electricity to Can Tho City includes 8 transformer stations with a total capacity of 4,775 MVA. Along with that, there are 6 500 kV lines and 22 220 kV lines connecting the power source in the area with a total length of nearly 580 km.
In the first 10 months of 2025, the power transmission system in the area operated stably and reliably, well meeting the socio -economic development needs of Can Tho City. However, to ensure the ability to release power sources in the area and increase the reliability of power supply for the following years, it is necessary to accelerate the progress of transmission projects.

Currently, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) is implementing 6 transmission projects in Can Tho City, of which 3 projects are under construction and facing difficulties in site clearance.
Specifically, the 500 kV O Mon - Thot Not transmission line project has a length of 35.2 km, expected to be energized in the fourth quarter of 2025. Currently, the project still has 228 households that have not approved the compensation plan, about 149 cases with affected houses and structures under the project corridor have not been cleared, and 25 households have had a compensation plan but have not received money according to the decision approved by the competent authority.
At the 220 kV Lap Vo Transformer Station Project and the Thot Not - Lap Vo connecting line, a new 220/110 kV transformer station with 2 220/110 kV - 250 MVA transformers will be built (01 transformer will be installed in this phase), a new 220 kV double-circuit line will be built from the 500/220 kV Thot Not transformer station to the 220 kV Lap Vo transformer station with a route length of about 18.64 km, of which the section passing through Can Tho City is 4.2 km long, including 14 tower positions.
According to the project plan, it will be energized in the third quarter of 2025, however, due to problems with the connection line site, the project has not been completed yet.
The second transformer installation project of the 500 kV Thot Not transformer station is being built within the premises of the 500 kV Thot Not transformer station in Thuan Hung ward. The project is under construction and is expected to be energized in the fourth quarter of 2025.
In 3 projects in the investment preparation stage, work is also being carried out urgently.
Specifically, the Project to Increase the capacity of the 220 kV Tra Noc transformer station from (125 + 250) MVA to 2x250 MVA is in the construction drawing design phase with estimates, expected to start construction in the third quarter of 2027 and be energized in the third quarter of 2028.
At the 500 kV LNG Bac Lieu - Thot Not Transmission Line Project, there is a scale of constructing a new 500 kV 02-circuit transmission line, about 130 km long, passing through 12 communes and wards of Can Tho City. This is a very important project to release the capacity of the Bac Lieu LNG Power Plant to supply electricity to the power system in general and Can Tho City in particular.
However, the Project has not yet agreed on the route of the power line, has no land use plan; has no construction plan; and has not approved the project investment policy.
The third project is the 500 kV Thot Not - Duc Hoa line, which has a scale of building a new 500 kV 02-circuit line, about 125 km long, expected to pass through 2 wards of Can Tho city and Dong Thap and Tay Ninh provinces. This project also aims to ensure the synchronous operation phase of the Bac Lieu LNG power plant to ensure electricity supply for Can Tho city and neighboring localities.
However, up to now, the project has not been approved by the competent authority for the route of the power line; the competent authority has not approved the project investment policy.
At the meeting, leaders of relevant departments, branches and localities of Can Tho City and representatives of EVNNPT's departments and units discussed and exchanged to find solutions to remove obstacles in investment and construction of projects. Localities of Can Tho City affirmed that they will participate with the highest determination to complete the project and energize it on schedule.
Waiting for local cooperation
At the meeting, EVNNPT General Director Pham Le Phu said that to meet the electricity demand in the area as well as to release power sources in the region, implementing the direction of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and EVN, EVNNPT is implementing a series of projects.
To ensure the progress of projects, especially projects under construction, EVNNPT also requested the People's Committee of Can Tho City to consider and issue specific support levels for households building houses on agricultural land that are forced to relocate but do not meet the conditions for compensation and resettlement, as a basis for implementing support and site clearance plans according to regulations.
Directing local authorities to help propagate and mobilize households cultivating contracted land to agree and coordinate to ensure smooth wire pulling construction of the 500 kV O Mon - Thot Not transmission line project.
For the Lap Vo 220 kV Transformer Station Project and the Thot Not - Lap Vo connecting line, it is recommended that Can Tho City direct the People's Committees of Thuan Hung and Tan Loc wards to help propagate and mobilize households to hand over the site of part 14 of the pier foundation positions in parallel with the implementation of the site clearance compensation process.
For the project of installing the second transformer at the 500 kV Thot Not transformer station, the People's Committee of Thuan Hung ward was directed to help propagate and mobilize households to hand over the land area for land acquisition in parallel with the implementation of the compensation and site clearance process.
For the two projects in the investment preparation stage, the 500 kV LNG Bac Lieu - Thot Not Line and the 500 kV Thot Not - Duc Hoa Line, EVNNPT also proposed that Can Tho City include them in the list of key projects and works for the period 2025 - 2030.
At the same time, soon issue a document approving the route of the power lines passing through Can Tho City; direct the departments, branches, and local People's Committees where the lines pass through to help provide information on planning, boundaries, current land use status, technical infrastructure works and population to complete the route agreement dossier.
The Department of Finance promptly receives and processes investment policy approval documents, and at the same time approves the investor to implement the 500 kV LNG Bac Lieu - Thot Not transmission line project.
