In the first steps of university, many students, especially new students, cannot help but feel disoriented and wonder about the question "Who am I?".

The rapidly developing era of artificial intelligence (AI) is changing career opportunities for young people. Many experts believe that defining goals and building a personal brand while still in school plays an important role in impressing employers and shaping oneself.

Understand yourself to develop

The talk show "WHO AM I!?" brings more than 450 students to identify personal values and apply artificial intelligence (AI) in building personal brands while still in school, organized by the MC Club, Ho Chi Minh City Open University.

Ms. Phan Thi Mai Quyen - lecturer of psychology, Ho Chi Minh City Open University - said that during the process of development and study at university, many young people do not really understand who they are, what they want, many students after the second year still do not know whether the major they chose is right or not.

So the question "Why do we have to discover and develop ourselves?" becomes more necessary than ever.

During her work, she realized that many young people do not evaluate and do not really understand themselves. But each person has a different reason. Some have difficulties because of an unsuitable living environment. Some have journeys and experiences that have not been resolved.

"Sometimes we know that certain behaviors are wrong, but we still repeat them; we make decisions to satisfy ourselves temporarily and then regret them. Human emotions and behaviors are complex, and sometimes we find it difficult to explain them," shared Master Phan Thi Mai Quyen.

According to her, there is a more worrying reality: many people wake up every day feeling heavy, living reactively rather than proactively. The most dangerous thing is not failure, but not knowing which version of yourself you are. But when we understand ourselves, we have the opportunity to change. But not everyone can do it right away, because emotions and behaviors sometimes stem from past experiences.

So, before we change, we need to understand the cause. When we understand why we are like this, we can build a suitable plan. But here is the challenge: many people do not have clear goals. Everyone says they want to change, but not everyone is committed to their own future. Change is a process that requires perseverance.

To go far, we need to dare to look straight at ourselves: who we are, what we want, what it means. Sometimes we need a teacher, a companion. And to maintain our commitment, build a good environment: teachers to guide, friends to support, activities to help balance. When we have the right ecosystem, we will gradually see our goals more clearly.

AI is a powerful assistant, humans are the core

Mr. Nguyen Tuan Dung - a branding expert, director, producer, and editor - believes that AI opens up many opportunities, but poses great challenges in terms of thinking and personal identity.

According to a survey he conducted with students, about 50% use AI as a friend to explore themselves, the other half consider AI as a powerful assistant to help support their studies and work.

"AI gives us many new perspectives, thinks of things we have never thought of and shortens the preparation process. However, AI cannot know everything, especially in areas related to human factors," said Mr. Dung.

He also warned against the tendency of some young people to completely depend on AI. If we only "sell ourselves" to AI, we will lose our core competencies. AI can help but cannot replace professionals.

When interviewing many young people working in the field of communications and marketing, Mr. Dung realized that their background knowledge was still limited. They were chasing after tools but forgot that their original ability was what determined how to use the tools.

Mr. Dung gave an example: "In the past, I was afraid of philosophy, but the more I study, the more I see that it helps train thinking and expand awareness. When we have a foundation of thinking, the way we use AI will be completely different, not rote learning or coping."

According to Mr. Dung, AI can help "unlock" the potential of thinking, suggest, open up and help us see problems from many perspectives. However, without our own identity, we can easily blend in.

"AI is just a tool, life experience is the real value that helps us accumulate thinking and distinguish what is suitable for us. Approach AI with a proactive mindset, learn and explore but always based on a foundation of thinking and expertise. Only then can we truly develop our own identity and capacity," Mr. Dung advised.

Ask to understand yourself

When you feel insecure or confused, remember that the development journey has no fixed roadmap, each person needs to find the right method to move forward. Gen Z often feels the pressure of comparison, but comparison is not necessarily negative.

What matters is how we perceive it. If comparison makes us feel burdened, ask: "Why am I upset?", "Where is the problem?". This recognition helps us adjust and progress.

"Sometimes pressure does not come from better people but from comments around. Learn to be selective: what is worth absorbing, take note of, what is not suitable, let go of. At that time, all pressure becomes motivation for us to improve", said Ms. Phan Thi Mai Quyen - lecturer of psychology, Ho Chi Minh City Open University.
