Hong Thy, 18 years old, is from Vam Lich hamlet, Cai Nhum commune, Vinh Long province. Her father died in an accident, her mother was in debt and had to go to work far away, she had to live with her sister-in-law's mother and almost lost the ability to go to university.
An anonymous person supported Thy with 50% of the full course tuition: "I just want her not to give up."
When she received the admission notice for the International Business major at the University of Finance and Marketing, the tuition fee for the first semester made Hong Thy almost desperate. Although she had registered for the Tuoi Tre Newspaper's Support to School scholarship, she still did not dare to hope too much and decided to put her university dream on hold.
Knowing Thy’s situation, Tuoi Tre reporters contacted her and guided her on ways to continue her studies, such as borrowing money or requesting a tuition extension. After much hesitation, Thy took a bus to Ho Chi Minh City, bringing her admission documents to the school with a small hope of receiving help.
Here, a teacher, after hearing Thy's story, quietly took out his wallet and lent her 15 million VND so she could complete the admission procedures. Not wanting to be named, the teacher only said: "Try to study hard, that's how you repay me."
The story quickly spread, touching the hearts of many people. Many Tuoi Tre readers shared that they were "moved to tears" when reading the article, and wanted to contribute to help Hong Thy study with peace of mind.
One of the benefactors who helped Thy through Tuoi Tre newspaper was a middle-aged man who asked to remain anonymous. He shared that he was once a poor student in Hanoi who had to work part-time to pay for his studies, so he understands the feeling of struggling between dreams and the reality of making a living.
"I read the story about Hong Thy in Tuoi Tre late at night. When I closed my phone, I felt choked up. The image of a poor student, alone carrying her application documents and taking a bus to Ho Chi Minh City to enroll in school without any money, made me unable to remain indifferent.
I remember back then, just having someone help me with a meal or a book was enough to warm my heart. Now that I have better conditions, I want to do the same for others, as a way to repay life," he confided.
After asking Tuoi Tre reporters to contact the school to inquire about tuition fees, he decided to support 50% of Thy's full-time tuition (about 90 million VND). He sent this support money to Thy each semester, through Tuoi Tre newspaper (he has now sent 15 million VND in the first installment), hoping that she could study with peace of mind.
The philanthropist said what made him happiest was not the amount of money he had sent, but knowing that a poor female student had more faith to continue going to class. "I do not want to mention her name. I believe that around us there are still many people willing to help if they see kindness spreading. I just hope she does not give up," he said.
Many philanthropists also quietly helped Hong Thy.
Up to now, there have been more anonymous people sending tuition fees, gifts and words of encouragement to Thy. According to the Tuoi Tre Newspaper Readers' Committee, more than 10 readers have sent money to help Hong Thy with a total amount of more than 7.5 million VND.
A businessman in Vinh Long also sent Thy more than 13 million VND, helping her pay off the remaining first semester tuition fee when completing the admission procedures.
On the afternoon of October 30, MSc. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung - in charge of the admissions, communications and corporate relations department of the University of Finance - Marketing - said that the school has officially decided to support 50% of the tuition fee for the entire course with a total value of 90 million VND for Hong Thy, as a student in difficult circumstances.
The amount of money the school supports Thy will be based on each semester, with the condition that her academic results are average or above.
In addition, the school also presented Thy with an electric motorbike worth about 20 million VND; former school official Hoang Thi Hoan presented 10 million VND.
In addition, Thy will receive a scholarship from a business that cooperates with the school, which will be considered for each semester, if she meets the learning level required by the business. The support level is from 5 to 10 million VND depending on the student's learning level and support after graduation.
"I didn't think there would be so many people who care and love me. I just try to study hard so as not to let everyone down," Thy said emotionally.
