Teacher Pham Huynh Hong Ngan (Ngo Thoi Nhiem Primary, Secondary and High School, Ho Chi Minh City) said that teaching today is very different from before. As an IT teacher, according to Ms. Ngan, today's students are very smart and have early access to the internet and technology, especially students in urban areas, so she and her colleagues have to remind themselves to regularly update their knowledge, teaching methods as well as technology applications in lessons to attract students. Especially with IT, teaching does not stop at the content in textbooks but can be expanded by teachers with a lot of content suitable to students' ability to receive. In particular, AI can support in making videos illustrating real-life situations such as students/parents smoking, students arguing with each other... to serve the lecture. However, if using AI to prepare a complete electronic lesson plan, the teacher does nothing but create commands, it means that the teacher is gradually losing his own role, making AI a risk instead of supporting his work.
The question of whether AI can replace teachers or not, the answer lies with each teacher. If we are sober and consider how to apply AI to become a useful tool for teaching and improving the quality of lessons, it will be a wonderful thing that the digital age brings to education . On the contrary, as Professor Dr. Le Anh Vinh - Director of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences warned, when teachers use AI to teach, students use AI to learn, in the end no one teaches and no one learns, only machines learn and become smarter.
Mr. Nguyen Son Hai - Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Information (Ministry of Education and Training) also warned that besides the positive aspects, AI also has many potential risks, especially for learners if they approach and use AI incorrectly. Mr. Hai gave an example that currently, in universities, there are essays, graduation projects or articles in English of very high quality. According to him, if that is really the learner's ability, this is a good thing. But if that is a product of AI, this is a challenge in current university administration.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc An - Chairman of the Vietnam Education Trade Union acknowledged that we are living in a digital age in all fields, education is no exception. Therefore, teachers cannot do without digital pedagogical solutions. However, overusing electronic lectures in teaching can create awkwardness and not achieve the desired results.
“We are changing the program for our teachers,” a high school teacher shared that she felt she was not teaching effectively despite presenting PowerPoint with elaborate preparations in terms of content, images, and words… A group of international experts at that time suggested that this teacher stop teaching PowerPoint for a month. And the result was that when she stopped using this tool, she "Teachers feel that students pay more attention and lessons are more effective," Mr. An shared and emphasized that digitalization should not be abused in education because the recipients of education are students. They need lessons that "touch" their emotions and hearts, not simply digitalized knowledge and formulas.
With AI capable of doing almost everything, what humans need more than ever is the ability to focus deeply, be creative, and think strategically. For teachers and education administrators, these are core competencies to lead students and colleagues in today's digital age.
