India successfully seeds artificial clouds, helping reduce air pollution in Delhi

The Delhi government has successfully seeded artificial clouds for the first time, creating rain in many areas, which is expected to help reduce fine dust and improve air quality, which is at alarming levels.

According to a VNA reporter in New Delhi, on the morning of October 28, the Delhi Territory government (India) successfully tested cloud seeding in many areas such as Burari, Karol Bagh, Mayur Vihar and Bhojpur, marking an important step forward in efforts to reduce the serious air pollution that is covering the city.

Local officials said the aircraft, which took off from Kanpur, carried out cloud seeding by spraying a mixture of silver iodide and sodium chloride into clouds with a humidity of 15-20%.

Rain is expected to occur in some areas of Delhi between 5pm and 6pm, helping to reduce fine dust and improve visibility in many places.

This is the first successful trial under the Delhi government's action plan to tackle severe air pollution every winter, when toxic smoke, exhaust fumes and smog often push the AQI above alarming levels.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta welcomed the positive results of the experiment, saying: “Cloud seeding is a pioneering and necessary step for Delhi. This initial success opens up the hope that we can use the technology to control and improve the living environment of the people.”

Last week, a test flight failed to produce rain because humidity was lower than needed for condensation to take place.

Experts say cloud seeding is a technology to artificially increase rainfall by injecting silver iodide or salt particles into clouds, helping moisture condense into ice crystals and fall as rain.

In addition to supporting water resources, this technique also helps wash away dirt and pollutants, significantly improving urban air quality.

Delhi environment officials said that if the subsequent trials prove effective, the city will expand cloud seeding in November, especially in heavily polluted areas such as Rohini, Dwarka and Anand Vihar./.
