Faced with increasingly deteriorating air quality, the Delhi regional government in India has announced it will conduct trials of artificial rainmaking to improve the environment.
On her X account, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that experts had tested the cloud seeding method in the Burari area on October 22nd, and the first official deployment is expected on October 29th. She emphasized that this is a historic scientific initiative aimed at developing an effective method to combat air pollution.
Previously, the campaign to strengthen winter pollution prevention measures had yielded positive results.
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said Delhi's AQI (Air Quality Index) dropped from 353 to 305 points in just one day, thanks to aggressive pollution control efforts. He stressed that around 2,000 teams were deployed 24/7, monitoring hotspots and coordinating through the Green Warfare Chamber.
Other measures include: strict monitoring of construction sites covering an area of over 500m², deploying 200 daytime and 178 nighttime teams to inspect dust and construction activities; using 70 motorized street sweepers, 70 anti-dust spray guns, and 140 garbage collection vehicles covering 1,440km of roads; and patrolling against the burning of garbage, leaves, and biomass with over 1,200 personnel.
Mr. Sirsa emphasized that Delhi is building a 24/7 environmental governance model, incorporating data, accountability, and citizen participation. He also stated that cloud seeding activities will be coordinated with IIT Kanpur and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to optimize pollution reduction effectiveness.
