Faced with worsening air quality, the government of India's Delhi region announced that it will conduct artificial rain trials to improve the environment.
On her X account, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that experts had tested the cloud seeding method in the Burari area on October 22, and it is expected to be officially deployed for the first time on October 29. She emphasized that this is a historic scientific initiative, aiming to build an effective method to combat air pollution.
Earlier, the campaign to strengthen winter pollution prevention measures had shown positive results.
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said Delhi's AQI had dropped from 353 to 305 in a single day, thanks to intensive pollution control operations. He noted that around 2,000 teams were deployed 24/7, monitoring hotspots and coordinating through the Green War Room.
Other measures include: strict monitoring of construction sites covering an area of over 500 square meters, deploying 200 daytime teams and 178 nighttime teams to check dust and construction activities; using 70 motorized road sweepers, 70 anti-smog spray guns, 140 garbage collection vehicles covering 1,440 kilometers of roads; patrolling against burning of garbage, leaves and biomass with over 1,200 personnel.
Mr. Sirsa stressed that Delhi is building a 24/7 environmental governance model that combines data, accountability and citizen participation. He also said that cloud seeding activities will be coordinated with IIT Kanpur and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to optimize the effectiveness of pollution reduction.
