China calls for lasting ceasefire in Gaza

According to Xinhua News Agency , speaking at an open debate of the United Nations Security Council on October 23, Mr. Fu Tong, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, called for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.

"The current ceasefire will become the basis for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire (in Gaza)," Mr. Pho Thong said.

China's permanent representative to the United Nations expressed concern that ceasefire violations between Israel and Hamas are still taking place, resulting in casualties among innocent civilians.

"China calls on all relevant parties to fully comply with the requirements of the ceasefire agreement, make efforts to achieve a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, and ensure Gaza regains security and stability," Mr. Pho Thong emphasized.

Humanitarian assistance in Gaza has partially resumed, but many obstacles remain, and urgent humanitarian needs remain unmet, the Chinese official added.

"Israel must fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law as an occupying force, open all border crossings, ensure the entry of large-scale humanitarian aid into Gaza and its safe and orderly distribution, and lift restrictions on aid activities carried out by humanitarian organizations," Mr. Pho Thong continued.

Mr. Pho Thong added that Gaza is the homeland of the Palestinian people, not a "bargaining chip" in international politics .

"Any agreement on the future of Gaza must comply with the consensus on 'Palestinian governance of Palestine' and respect the will of the Palestinian people. After two years of bombing, Gaza has been severely devastated, and it is urgent to start reconstruction and restore livelihoods there as soon as possible," Mr. Pho Thong continued.

China's permanent representative to the United Nations said that implementing the two-state solution is the only way out for the Palestine issue, asserting that this solution has no alternative and cannot be rejected.

"Only when an independent Palestinian State is established and the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people are realized can historical injustices and the root causes of violence be eliminated, and lasting peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel be achieved," Mr. Pho Thong continued.

Mr. Pho Thong called on Israel to end its settlement activities in the West Bank and stop undermining the foundation of the Palestinian Authority. The international community should condemn unilateral actions that endanger the foundation of the two-state solution and support an independent Palestinian state and full membership of Palestine in the United Nations at the earliest possible date.

According to Mr. Pho Thong, the United Nations Security Council is primarily responsible for maintaining international peace and security, and needs to play an active role in maintaining peace and stability in Gaza.

"China is willing to work with the international community to promote a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, reduce humanitarian disasters, realize the two-state solution, and ultimately achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestine issue," Mr. Fu Tong emphasized.
