At the end of May, the clusters of lychee trees laden with branches begin to turn red like "lighting fire" in the gardens located next to houses and on gentle hillsides. People in Thai Nien commune (Bao Thang district) enter the early lychee harvest season with radiant joy. This year's lychee harvest is not only bountiful but also has good prices, bringing stable income to many families.

Thai Nien commune has about 5 hectares of lychee, planted in many villages in the commune. Lychee is mainly grown in villages along the Red River, where the land is fertile. When the lychee begins to turn red and become plump, it is time for people to start harvesting. Early ripening lychee variety is ready for harvest after about 4 years of planting and care. The tree is given a low canopy to facilitate harvesting. With lychee bunches too high, farmers use ladders to pick the fruit more conveniently and safely.
After being picked from the tree, the lychees are pruned, poor quality fruit is removed and tied into bundles. On holidays, many children go to the garden to help their parents harvest lychees. After months of hard work, farmers are excited because the lychee crop is good.
The whole family works together to harvest and sort lychees to sell to traders. Traders buy large, beautiful lychees at the garden for 25,000 VND/kg. The price of lychees has increased slightly compared to previous seasons, so lychee growers have more income. Thai Nien litchi is purchased by traders and then distributed to wholesale markets and fruit shops in the province.
