All three former US presidents have received invitations but do not plan to attend. A spokesman for President-elect Donald Trump has not responded to requests for comment on their absence.
However, the three former leaders will still attend Mr. Trump’s inauguration ceremony on the morning of January 20. The former first ladies will also be present at the event, except for Mrs. Michelle Obama. Previously, Mrs. Obama also did not attend the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter last week.
Inauguration Day is a rare occasion for former US presidents to gather and welcome the new administration. However, Mr. Trump refused to attend President Joe Biden's inauguration in 2021.
Previously, the three former presidents all turned their backs on Mr. Trump's campaign. Mr. Bush did not offer any support, while Mr. Obama and Mr. Clinton actively campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for the White House.
The Clintons attended the inaugural luncheon in 2017 after Hillary Clinton was defeated by Trump. At the luncheon, Trump called for a round of applause for Hillary. “I was really honored to hear that President Bill Clinton and Secretary Hillary Clinton would be here today,” Trump said at the time.
The tradition of holding an inaugural luncheon began in 1897, when the U.S. Senate hosted a banquet at the Capitol for President William McKinley and guests. |
