The three-day Reuters/Ipsos poll, which ended on Oct. 29, showed the two candidates essentially tied ahead of the Nov. 5 election. The poll has a margin of error of about 3 percentage points in either direction. While Harris has led Trump in every Reuters/Ipsos poll of registered voters since the race began in July, her lead has steadily narrowed since late September. The previous Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted Oct. 16-21 showed Harris with a 2-point lead over Trump. The latest poll of 1,150 adults nationwide, including 975 registered voters, showed Trump with a significant advantage over Harris on some of the issues voters consider most pressing. When asked which candidate would have a better approach to the economy, unemployment and job creation, 47% of voters chose Trump, while 37% chose Harris. Trump has had an advantage on the economy throughout the campaign. 26% of voters in the latest poll said jobs and the economy were the country's most pressing issue, while 24% chose political extremism and 18% chose immigration. Trump also has a big advantage on immigration, with his hard-line proposals such as mass deportations of immigrants in the country illegally. About 48% of voters in the latest poll said Trump's approach to immigration was the best, while 33% chose Harris. The poll also showed that Harris's advantage on political extremism is fading. About 40% of voters in the poll said she has a better approach to dealing with political extremism and threats to democracy, while 38% chose Trump. Harris has repeatedly highlighted Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol Hill riot. Trump has countered by arguing that Harris’s views are extreme. Harris’s narrow lead over Trump may not be enough to win the election, even if it holds through Nov. 5. National polls provide important signals about voter sentiment, but the state-by-state electoral college results determine the winner, so seven battleground states are crucial. Trump defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election in the electoral college, even though Clinton won the national popular vote by 2 points.
