Ms. Harris failed because she did not care about the economy and inflation.

Indeed, American voters care more about the economy than other issues, and nearly half say they have been dissatisfied with their financial situation over the past four years.

That is why Republican candidate Donald Trump is the chosen one to be the next president.

About 31% of voters said the economy was their top concern, second only to the 35% who said the state of democracy was the most important issue, according to national exit poll data from Edison Research. And voters who identified the economy as their main concern voted overwhelmingly for Mr. Trump over Ms. Harris — 79% to 20%.

Meanwhile, high inflation in recent years and its negative impact on financial prosperity has worried voters and turned to support Mr. Trump.

More than half of voters said inflation had caused them moderate hardship over the past year, while nearly 25% said it had caused severe hardship. Those who experienced moderate hardship were more likely to vote for Mr. Trump, 50% to 47%, while 73% of those who experienced severe hardship voted for the former president.

Edison Exit Poll data shows that 45% of voters nationwide say their family's financial situation is worse now than it was four years ago, compared with just 20% of voters who said the same in 2020. These voters favor Mr. Trump over Ms. Harris by a margin of 80% to 17%.

Other surveys also show consumers are underestimating the economy, despite unemployment being near record lows, overall growth remaining above trend, consumer spending remaining strong and total household wealth reaching a record high.
