Salted crab with delicious fish sauce in Ca Mau costs up to 250,000 VND/kg

On November 2, according to the reporter's records, live crabs weighing 22-26 crabs/kg in Ca Mau were purchased by traders at people's homes at 43,000 VND/kg; crabs weighing less than 16 crabs/kg were priced at 72,000 VND/kg.

The crab catching profession has helped many idle farm workers in Ca Mau have a stable source of income.

Raw crabs are sold by traders to cooperatives that produce salted crabs at prices 2,000 - 5,000 VND/kg (depending on the type) higher than the purchase price from the people.

Ms. Tran Thi Xa, Director of Dam Doi Ba Khia Cooperative, Ca Mau province, said that the facility's salted ba khia products have been recognized as 4-star OCOP.

"The cooperative purchases from the people from 500 kg to 1 ton of raw crabs per day. The cooperative sells grade 1 salted crabs to the market at 150,000 VND/kg, grade 2 at 130,000 VND/kg; and the delicious fish sauce salted crabs cost 250,000 VND/kg" - Ms. Xa shared.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh (living in Ca Mau province) said that dishes made from three-sided crabs were previously mainly associated with the lives of working farmers. However, when they became a specialty, three-sided crabs not only brought income to idle farmers but also helped many households get rich. In 2020, the three-sided crab salting profession in Ca Mau was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

"For regular salted crabs, users have to marinate them with sugar, chili and lemon, then mix well to let them soak in and enjoy; but for salted crabs with fish sauce, there is no need to marinate them and they can be used immediately. Dishes made from fresh salted crabs and salted crabs with fish sauce are very... delicious with rice" - Mr. Tinh said with a laugh.

Crabs live in abundance in shrimp ponds, rivers and mangrove forests in Ca Mau. This species grows entirely in the wild. People catch crabs by using flashlights at night, hooking bait into mouse traps and placing them in front of their caves...
