Since April 2022, Ms. S., over 50 years old (living in Bac Kan ) no longer has her monthly period. Thinking that this is a sign of menopause due to her old age, Ms. S. did not think anything of it.
However, 7 months later, Ms. S. suddenly felt her abdomen moving. Fearing an abnormality, Ms. S. went to Military Hospital 354 ( Hanoi ) for a check-up and was unexpectedly informed that she was 22 weeks pregnant.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong - Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Military Hospital 354, who directly examined Mrs. S., when informed of her pregnancy, the pregnant woman revealed that she already had 2 grandchildren (the eldest was 11 years old) and felt ashamed of being pregnant at such an advanced age.
The baby girl was born healthy, weighing 3.2kg (Photo: BSCC).
"The patient initially intended to abort the fetus. However, through examination and ultrasound, we determined that the fetus was normal, so we analyzed and advised the pregnant woman. In the end, the family decided to keep the pregnancy," said Dr. Phuong.
Being pregnant at an advanced age, the pregnant woman has many concerns about the health of the fetus. Therefore, during the pregnancy, Dr. Phuong often discussed and advised the pregnant woman, especially on nutrition. During the remaining 5 months of pregnancy, the pregnant woman S. also went for check-ups at the milestones the doctor noted.
Recently, at 37 weeks pregnant, the pregnant woman's water broke and she was admitted to Hospital 354 for a cesarean section, but her family and the pregnant woman wanted a normal birth. The doctor closely monitored her and assessed that she could have a normal birth, so he agreed with the family's wishes.
After giving birth, the 3.2kg baby girl cried out at 11:39 a.m. at the Obstetrics Department, Military Hospital 354, to the overwhelming happiness of the doctors and the whole family.
"This is the oldest case of natural pregnancy and successful birth at Military Hospital 354. Three years ago, we successfully delivered a baby in Phu Tho at the age of 47," said Dr. Phuong.
From this case, doctors recommend that premenopausal women should not be subjective when the possibility of conception is still there. Therefore, women at this stage still need to take appropriate contraceptive measures. When there are abnormal signs such as menstrual disorders, they must see a specialist soon.
To give birth to a healthy child, limiting risks and risks of birth defects, according to obstetricians, the best age for a woman to give birth is from 20 to 29. This is also the age when it is easy to conceive, by the age of 30 there is only a 20% chance of conceiving each month; by the age of 40 it is only 5%.
Dr. Phan Chi Thanh - Chief of Office of Training Center - Line Command, Central Maternity Hospital also gave 3 notes for women who get pregnant late after 35 years old.
First, women should have a health check before planning to get pregnant. If they are not in good health, they should not try to get pregnant.
Second, during pregnancy, it is necessary to screen for abnormalities and closely monitor the entire pregnancy.
Third, pregnant women should develop a scientific diet with a variety of foods to increase the mother's resistance as well as the development of the fetus.
