Captain Vu Dang Toan shared that on April 30, 1975, he was the Commander of Tank 390 - one of the two tanks that first approached the Independence Palace, the other was Tank 843. Both tanks belonged to Company 4, Battalion 1, Tank Brigade 203 - Corps 2. The driver of Tank 390 that day was Sergeant Nguyen Van Tap.
Arriving at the Independence Palace gate and seeing tank 843 stopped at the side gate, Sergeant Tap asked the vehicle commander Vu Dang Toan: "What should we do now?". Mr. Toan ordered the tank to crash straight into the gate. "At that time, comrade Tap received the order to accelerate, aimed straight at the Independence Palace gate, knocked down the gate and rushed into the palace yard," said Mr. Toan.
Mr. Toan said that according to the plan, whichever tank entered the palace first would plant the flag. Seeing tank 843 led by Lieutenant Bui Quang Than approaching from behind, Mr. Toan carried an AK gun to support Lieutenant Than in running into the Independence Palace to plant the flag. - B
