Author Ha Tung Long said that after hearing the news of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's passing, he was deeply saddened. Immediately, he wrote four lines of poetry to express his grief and shared them on social media: “Bidding farewell to him on white clouds / My heart is heavy with sorrow / A life like a fragrant lotus / A lifetime shining brightly like the sun.” He didn't expect these four lines of poetry to resonate with thousands of people and be shared on their personal pages. From then on, he harbored the desire to create something that could spread more widely, touch the emotions of more people, and endure through time. And so he began composing the song “A Life Like a Fragrant Lotus.”

“In my grief and sorrow, I wanted to do something meaningful and valuable to honor General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. And so I began composing the song “A Life as Fragrant Lotus” two days after his passing.”

Having finished the song at 1 AM, I immediately informed singer Anh Thơ. Upon receiving the lyrics and melody, Anh Thơ was deeply moved and immediately discussed plans to record the song so that it could be released as soon as possible.

Singer Anh Thơ herself had previously expressed a desire to do something to show her appreciation for General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng, so when she received the song "A Life as a Fragrant Lotus," she immediately resonated with the lyrics and melody.

Pham Tuan Anh – the arranger for the song – immediately messaged me upon receiving the song, saying, "This song is very touching!" and started working on the arrangement in a very short time.

To record and release the song in time for the state funeral of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, singer Anh Tho, who was on a business trip in Hue, had to change her schedule to fly back earlier and go straight to the recording studio. "We only had about 40 hours to complete the arrangement, record the song, and upload it to the online music streaming platform YouTube," shared author Ha Tung Long.

Singer Anh Thơ also said that, for her, General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng was a very respected leader. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself entirely to the country and its people. Therefore, upon hearing the news of General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng's passing, she wanted to do something to express her feelings, gratitude, and sorrow.

“I received a call from journalist Ha Tung Long at midnight informing me that he had just finished a song about General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. I was a little surprised. Before this, I had only seen Ha Tung Long write articles, never compose music. Receiving the song "A Life as a Fragrant Lotus" that Ha Tung Long sent me was even more surprising because the song is very profound and meaningful. The lyrics are simple yet refined and insightful; the melody is poignant and deeply moving… perfectly matching my mood as well as everyone else's right now.”

On the way from Hue to Hanoi, I tried my best to memorize the song, and when I entered the recording studio, I recorded very quickly. During the recording process, I tried very hard to control my emotions so that the lump in my throat wouldn't mix with the lyrics, but in the end, tears still welled up. Feeling each word of the song, looking back at the life of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, I am even more grateful to him because he lived a full life for the country and the people, with the unwavering loyalty of a communist," singer Anh Tho confided.

Author Ha Tung Long added that this is his debut musical work. From the moment he started writing, he thought of drawing inspiration from the Quan Ho folk songs of Bac Ninh because General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's hometown of Lai Da (Dong Hoi, Dong Anh, Hanoi) was formerly part of Dong Ngan district, Tu Son prefecture (Bac Ninh) – a region rich in cultural traditions, especially Quan Ho folk songs. Since childhood, the smooth and profound melodies of Quan Ho folk songs have nurtured his soul and fostered his love for his homeland. As a leader, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is also very concerned about the development of culture and art, especially the building of an advanced Vietnamese culture with a strong national identity. Therefore, nothing could be more fitting than incorporating the Quan Ho style of Bac Ninh into the melody of the song "A Life as a Fragrant Lotus."
