Russia's TASS news agency reported that former Syrian diplomat Bassam Barabandi told The Washington Post that on the eve of his overthrow, al-Assad rejected a deal with the United States.
The Washington Post reported that a few weeks before the opposition offensive in Syria, the US proposed a deal through the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under which Mr. al-Assad would deny Iran the use of the Middle Eastern country’s territory as a supply route to Hezbollah in Lebanon. In return, the US promised to gradually lift sanctions.
More damaging than al-Assad's rapid ouster, according to The Washington Post , was his refusal to establish relations with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had proposed normalizing relations with Damascus in exchange for curbing Kurdish forces and allowing at least some Syrian refugees to return home.
Turkey is considered a backer of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the group leading the opposition forces that launched a large-scale attack on November 27 on Syrian army positions in Aleppo and Idlib provinces, from which it launched a lightning offensive to take control of many areas, including the capital Damascus.
On December 8, the opposition entered the capital Damascus, and Syrian government troops left the city. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali expressed readiness for a peaceful transfer of power. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that al-Assad resigned and left the country.
Regarding the situation in Syria, Al Jazeera TV channel reported that armed opposition forces have assigned politician Mohammed al-Bashir, head of the Syrian National Salvation Government (SSG) movement in Idlib, the responsibility of forming a transitional government.
According to the TV channel, Mr. Mohammed al-Bashir was born in Idlib province, northwestern Syria, in 1983 and was appointed as the head of SSG in January this year.
