The Belgian Ministry of Health has just revealed a serious scandal involving a Danish sperm donor, carrying a mutated gene that can cause cancer, who became the father of 52 children in Belgium between 2008 and 2017.
The case is likely to involve many other children across Europe.
According to a recent investigation by The Guardian, at least 10 cases of children with cancer have been recorded among a total of 67 children born from this man's sperm during the above period.
The original sperm donor was deemed to be healthy, with no family history of cancer, and had also undergone tests according to current regulations at the time of donation.
However, it was later discovered that he carried a mutation in the TP53 gene - the cause of Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), a rare genetic disorder that increases the risk of serious cancers, including breast cancer and leukemia.
In 2023, a medical alert was issued after several children born from this man's sperm at a clinic in Denmark were diagnosed with cancer.
In the same year, the Belgian Federal Agency for Pharmaceuticals and Health Products (FAMHP) was informed about the incident.
However, Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke said he was only informed about the incident on May 26.
The Belgian government has refused to say how many cases of cancer in the country have been confirmed in the case.
The scandal has exposed serious violations of Belgian law, including a 2007 rule limiting sperm from one donor to a maximum of six women.
Through an internal review, the authorities identified 37 affected families in Belgium, resulting in 52 births. However, not all of these children are living in Belgium.
In addition, this donor's sperm has also been used in at least nine other countries, including Bulgaria, Cyprus, Germany, Spain, Hungary, Ireland, Greece, the Netherlands and Poland.
