The baby is the child of Ms. Vo Thi Thanh N. (Khanh Lam commune, Ca Mau province), born at 6:50 am on August 18 at U Minh Medical Center. Because she was born too early compared to the expected date (expected date of birth on November 29) and cried weakly, the baby was given respiratory support and transferred to Ca Mau Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital in a state of severe respiratory failure.
Here, the neonatal team urgently placed the baby in an incubator, provided non-invasive respiratory support, administered intravenous nutrition, and used Surfactant to help expand the lungs through a minimally invasive method.
After 7 days of intensive care, the baby began to drink milk through a gastric tube; on the 20th day, the baby could breathe oxygen and was cared for with the Kangaroo method with his mother.
After 40 days, the baby was breathing air on its own; by day 58, the baby was exclusively breastfed, gaining weight well, with no signs of retinal or hearing problems. The baby was discharged at 35 weeks adjusted gestational age, weighing 2kg, breathing on its own and exclusively breastfed.
According to Dr. Vo Phi Au, this is the first case in which Ca Mau Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital successfully supported an extremely premature baby at 25 weeks.
"Extremely premature infants are a very fragile group of patients because their organs such as the lungs, heart, brain, and kidneys are not yet fully developed, making them susceptible to complications such as respiratory failure, hypothermia, pulmonary hemorrhage, or severe infection.
For a 25-week-old baby weighing less than 1kg to overcome the critical stage and be discharged from the hospital healthy, it takes a harmonious coordination between departments, along with the trust of the patient's family. This is also the motivation for the medical team to continue to make efforts to save the lives of many other premature babies," Dr. Au shared.
From 2024 to October 2025, the neonatal department of Ca Mau Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital treated 252 premature babies, the survival rate of premature babies from 25 weeks to under 34 weeks reached 89.8%. In 2025 alone, there were 5 cases of babies weighing less than 1kg saved.
