According to Reuters news agency, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko confirmed on May 15 that four Russian military aircraft were shot down in Russian airspace last week near the border of Ukraine and Belarus, and said Minsk responded by putting its armed forces on high alert.
Earlier, Russia's Kommersant daily reported on May 13 that a group of Russian warplanes including a Su-34 fighter-bomber, a Su-35 fighter and two Mi-8 helicopters were shot down in an ambush near Klintsy in Russia's Bryansk region.
Meanwhile, the TASS news agency reported on May 13 that a Russian Su-34 fighter jet crashed in the area, but the cause was unknown. In addition, TASS cited Russian authorities as saying that a Russian helicopter crashed in the same area due to an engine fire.
