Hai Phong Eye Hospital promptly rescued a case of critical penetrating eyeball injury

(Haiphong.gov.vn) - On the afternoon of June 3, Hai Phong Eye Hospital received and promptly provided emergency care to patient STV (18 years old, H'Mong ethnic group, residing in Bao Lam district, Cao Bang province) who suffered a serious eye injury due to a work accident.

During the work, the patient was hit in the left eye by a pair of scissors, causing a penetrating wound to the eyeball, a torn cornea, and a torn iris – a serious injury that could have resulted in permanent vision loss. Thanks to the urgent intervention and high expertise of the medical team, Hai Phong Eye Hospital was able to promptly treat and preserve the patient’s left eye.

The team performed surgery on the patient.

Previously, the patient received first aid at Thuy Nguyen Hospital and was urgently transferred to Hai Phong Eye Hospital. Upon admission, the on-duty team promptly examined, consulted, and determined penetrating eyeball injury, corneal laceration, iris laceration, and monitored for a ruptured lens in the left eye.

Faced with the high risk of vision loss and infection, the surgery was performed urgently under the direction of Dr. Nguyen Trong Nghia - Deputy Director of the Hospital, and the surgical team. The surgery was successful, restoring the cornea and preserving the structure of the eyeball, helping the patient overcome the critical condition.

The hospital visited, encouraged and gave gifts to support patients.

The patient is of the H'Mong ethnic group, in difficult circumstances, with limited Kinh language communication, causing initial difficulties in treatment. However, the medical team actively supported, ensuring the care process was correct and safe. Currently, the patient's left eye is stable, the wound is recovering well, and no serious complications have been detected. The patient continues to be treated and closely monitored at the General Treatment Department.

In response to the patient’s difficult circumstances, the Board of Directors of Hai Phong Eye Hospital has drawn from the “For Eyes for the Poor” Fund to visit, encourage and partially support the treatment costs. Through the incident, the Hospital recommends that people strictly follow labor protection measures, especially in environments with a high risk of eye injuries. In case of an accident, it is necessary to immediately go to a specialized eye medical facility for timely examination and treatment to avoid the risk of permanent vision loss.
