* As the 6th largest consumer country in the world, Vietnamese people eat nearly 34kg of pork every year. But few people know that 1kg of pork emits 4.84kg of CO2 into the environment.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, from 2021-2023, Vietnam ranked 6th among the countries with the highest market share of pork production in the world. Among the 10 countries with the largest pork consumption in the world, Vietnam ranked 6th.

If the average weight of a standard pig for sale is 90kg, a pig emits about 438kg of CO2 equivalent, meaning that every 1kg of pork emits about 4.84kg of CO2 equivalent into the environment.

Thus, with the number of pigs we produce fluctuating around 50 million per year, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from pig farming is the largest in the industry, about 22 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year.

In the Draft Decree amending and supplementing a number of articles of Decree No. 06/2022/ND-CP dated January 7, 2022 of the Government regulating the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and protection of the ozone layer, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has added the livestock industry (pigs, cows) to the list of establishments required to inventory greenhouse gases.

According to the draft, farms with a regular scale of 3,000 pigs or more will have to conduct greenhouse gas inventories. That is, thousands of pig farms in our country will have to conduct inventories, then reduce emissions according to the assigned quota.

Mr. Pham Kim Dang, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), said that a part of the waste in the pig farming industry is treated as organic fertilizer or used as input material for biogas systems to create renewable energy, raise insects, etc.
