During 3 days (from December 18 to 20), in Phan Thiet City, the Department of International Cooperation - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in coordination with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Vietnam organized a conference to summarize the project "Promoting private investment in low-carbon agriculture and climate change response, contributing to the implementation of Vietnam's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).
Attending the event were leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Thuan and Bac Lieu provinces, experts in the fields of cultivation and aquaculture, and members of the project to develop the green, low-emission and sustainable dragon fruit and shrimp industry.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in recent years, climate change has affected agricultural production, leading to many difficulties in people's lives. In addition, the increase in environmental pollution has negatively affected the ecosystem and human health. Therefore, this project is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in coordination with the United Nations Development Program in 2 provinces: Binh Thuan and Bac Lieu in 2021. Thereby, it aims to create a major change in the approach to developing agricultural production towards greater transparency, responsibility and sustainability.
In Binh Thuan alone, the project budget was approved at over VND6.9 billion. The project has four main activities, including: Promoting development and improving the quality of dragon fruit chain linkages towards low carbon emissions, sustainability and resilience to climate risks; Promoting and developing the brand of dragon fruit products in Binh Thuan province; Cooperating in promoting digital transformation in dragon fruit management and production; Calling for green finance and financial incentives to invest in environmentally friendly, low carbon emission production and processing technologies.
After nearly 3 years of implementation, Binh Thuan has successfully built and developed a sustainable, green, clean dragon fruit value chain that adapts to climate change. Nearly 4,500 people have benefited from greening dragon fruit production and business. 100% of project members use 9W LED bulbs to handle off-season flowering, saving more than 75% of electricity consumption, using an energy-saving irrigation system to reduce 42% of irrigation water; applying electronic diary on dragon fruit management software has helped cooperatives and businesses meet the conditions to sign export consumption linkage contracts...
For the development of a green, low-emission and sustainable shrimp industry in Bac Lieu province, renewable energy and policies related to environmental protection and finance in the shrimp value chain have been developed; facilities and farms have been encouraged to strengthen cooperation, contributing to expanding and stabilizing the supply of high-quality shrimp, meeting the needs of high-end domestic consumption supply chains and exporting to international markets.
In addition to the achievements, delegates gave their opinions on the shortcomings and difficulties to continue to maintain and expand the chains of activities to sustainably develop the dragon fruit and shrimp industry in the coming time. In particular, transforming agriculture towards green, low-carbon, sustainable and climate change-adaptive; integrating multi-value with a modern, transparent governance system associated with the digital transformation process and closely linking between entities in the value chains is an inevitable trend. Thereby, contributing to the implementation of national strategies, action plans and international commitments of Vietnamese agriculture.
It is known that within the framework of the conference, delegates visited a number of cooperatives and dragon fruit processing enterprises in the province participating in the project. Specifically, they visited the cold storage system for preserving dragon fruit at Phuc Ha Juice Company Limited (Hai Ninh Commune, Bac Binh); the dragon fruit growing model at facilities owned by women at Ham Minh 30 Cooperative; Trinh Anh Import-Export Company Limited (Ham Thuan Nam) and visited the dragon fruit processing facility at Hoa Le Clean Dragon Fruit Cooperative (Ham Thuan Bac).
