Sharing at the conference on training Olympic teams for the 2016-2025 period, Mr. Huynh Van Chuong - Director of the Department of Quality Management, Ministry of Education and Training - said that recently, the training and nurturing of excellent students to participate in international and regional Olympics has achieved many good results, and has received investment attention from many localities.
From 2016 to 2024, 220 Vietnamese students won regional and international Olympic medals. Of these, 146 students (accounting for 66%) went to study abroad in the US, Singapore, France, China, Australia, the UK...
According to the Ministry of Education and Training , most students who study abroad often stay to work because of the benefits, high salaries, as well as the desire to improve themselves in countries with advanced science .
According to Mr. Chuong, this is also something that makes the Ministry of Education and Training "worry". Because after the exams, students move on to phase 2, which is specialized training, high-level training, which is currently still open.
"It's not just about medals, certificates of merit and honors. You have a long journey of 40 years of dedication. So how can you come back to develop the country?", Mr. Chuong said.

Vietnam's international and regional Olympic competition results
Mr. Chuong acknowledged that the reason why Olympic winners go to study abroad and stay abroad is because Vietnam does not have a training mechanism to attract and nurture these talented students.
The second reason is that there is no recruitment mechanism, appropriate treatment, or suitable working environment for these subjects after completing their undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs, leading to many students wanting to return to contribute to the country but still hesitant.
Third, a network of contacts with students after their achievements has not been built to mobilize them to serve the country's innovation and development process.
Currently, the Ministry of Education and Training is developing a project on selecting, nurturing, training, using, and rewarding talented, key, and gifted personnel (including excellent students and Olympic winners), which has been included in the action plan to implement Resolution 71 of the Politburo.
In addition, there is a pilot program for skipping levels and grades along with a dual-degree training mechanism (allowing talented people to study at domestic universities and combine online and short-term direct study to receive additional international degrees from prestigious educational institutions).
As a result, in the period 2016-2025, Vietnamese teams participating in regional and international Olympic competitions brought Vietnam 362 medals, including 112 gold medals, 140 silver medals, 89 bronze medals and 21 certificates of merit, surpassing the total of 48 medals in the period 2006-2015.
If we consider the number of gold medals in the 2016-2025 period (112 gold medals); compared to the 2006-2015 period (62 medals), there was an increase of 50 medals (the 2006-2015 period achieved 314 medals, including 62 gold medals, 114 silver medals, 105 bronze medals and 33 certificates of merit).
