The incident in which Bang Van Vy (born in 1996, residing in Que Phong commune, Nghe An province) used a knife to attack 7 people at Nghe An Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital on October 23, including 4 medical staff, 2 patient relatives and 1 newborn baby, caused public outrage.
On October 24, Dr. Ha Anh Duc, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, Ministry of Health, said that as of this morning, the health of the victims was basically stable. The most seriously injured person was nurse Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang with many injuries, including two injuries to the carotid artery and the subclavian artery. She was transferred to Nghe An General Hospital for timely emergency treatment and passed the critical stage.
"The other victims basically had soft tissue injuries and no life-threatening problems," said Dr. Duc.

Recently, there have been many cases of assault on medical staff across the country. Most recently, Vung Tau General Hospital sent a document to Ho Chi Minh City Police and Phuoc Thang Ward Police requesting strict punishment for a man claiming to be a patient's relative who yelled, cursed, and used abusive language towards the on-duty staff; at the same time, he used his hand to hit a nurse named Th. on the face and head four times while on duty. As a result, the nurse was stunned and unable to continue working.
According to Vung Tau General Hospital, the man's actions have seriously affected the health and spirit of medical staff. More seriously, it is likely to affect the lives of other patients (severe cases) being treated in the Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department. Therefore, the hospital has requested the authorities to strictly handle the situation of patients' relatives assaulting medical staff in accordance with the law.

Faced with the above situation, the Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management said that there are many causes leading to violence in hospitals, both subjective and objective.
Every year, the country has about 200 million outpatient visits, with large hospitals seeing nearly ten thousand visits per day, putting a lot of pressure on medical staff. However, the medical industry is a service industry, medical staff need to be skillful, have an appropriate attitude towards patients and their families, and need to be trained in communication skills.
Violence often occurs in emergency or intensive care areas, where patients' lives are in danger. Patients and their families are often anxious, easily upset and frustrated.
However, Dr. Duc affirmed that assaults on medical staff by patients or their relatives are unacceptable. He cited the incident at Thanh Ba Medical Center (Phu Tho), where medical staff, despite being assaulted, still devoted themselves to saving the life of a child.

To prevent medical violence, since May, the Ministry of Health has implemented comprehensive solutions, including requiring hospitals to strengthen education and improve communication skills for medical staff from doctors to nurses. Despite the high pressure of work, medical staff need to avoid inappropriate words or actions when explaining to patients' families.
The second is innovation in ensuring security and order at the grassroots level, especially strengthening protection in emergency and intensive care areas; innovation in hospital management, application of information technology, digital transformation to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, upgrading facilities, etc.
The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Public Security have signed a coordination regulation to ensure security and order in the medical field. Therefore, in the coming time, the Ministry of Health will coordinate more closely with local authorities, especially the grassroots police, to handle cases promptly and with deterrence.
Dr. Ha Anh Duc also shared that the only wish of medical staff is to bring health and help patients recover quickly. In stressful situations, if medical staff have inappropriate words or gestures, we hope that patients and their families will sympathize and share to create a safe working environment. This helps medical staff to wholeheartedly treat patients, aiming for a common goal - the health and safety of patients.
