Brazil orders "ban" of social network X (Twitter), will severely punish anyone who intentionally uses it

On August 30, the Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) ruled to ban social network X, formerly known as Twitter, nationwide, after the company owned by billionaire Elon Musk refused to appoint a legal representative in the country.

The Guardian reported that earlier on August 28, Judge Alexandre de Moraes of the STF gave X a 24-hour deadline, requiring the company to appoint a legal representative.

Tensions between the two sides have simmered for months over X's disregard for court orders to remove accounts and content that incite coups or undermine democracy.

The STF fined the platform 18 million reais (about $3.2 million) for non-compliance with local regulations. X also closed its representative office in Brazil on August 17, following warnings about the arrest of the company's former legal representative.

According to Judge Alexandre de Moraes, X repeatedly defied court orders and refused to pay daily fines.

He believes X is trying to circumvent the law in Brazil and create an "outlaw zone" on social media, especially ahead of the country's local elections this year.

Judge de Moraes ordered Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) to block access to X in the South American country, and set a five-day deadline for Apple and Google to remove the X app from their online stores.

Brazil will impose a daily financial fine of 50,000 Reais (about $10,000) on any individual or company that deliberately tries to access X after the ban.
