The orange flesh is golden yellow, the peel is smooth and thin, different from other oranges. Xa Doai oranges are harvested during the Lunar New Year. Usually, customers will come to pay for them several months in advance and wait until just before Tet to pick them.

With just over a month left until Lunar New Year, this is also the time when the specialty orange gardens of Xa Doai in Nghi Dien commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province begin to ripen and prepare for harvest.

However, unlike every year, orange orchards continuously shed large quantities of fruit, making people restless.

Especially, when Xa Doai oranges are being sold for 70,000 VND to 80,000 VND/fruit. Every morning going to the garden, counting each orange that has fallen under the tree, the garden owner feels sad.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tho (residing in Nghi Dien commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province) grows 50 Xa Doai orange trees. Every year, during Tet, Mr. Tho earns from 250 to 350 million VND from his orange garden. This year, Mr. Tho is very worried because Xa Doai oranges are falling off in large numbers for unknown reasons.

Mr. Tho said that when the oranges first bore fruit, the garden was very beautiful and laden with fruit. However, since September, the oranges have started to fall off in large numbers. Many orange trees have almost all fallen off. In a short time, Mr. Tho's orange garden has lost nearly half of its fruit.

Currently, Mr. Tho's orange garden still has more than 4,000 oranges. However, from now until Tet, the oranges will continue to fall, and it is expected that there will only be about 2,000 oranges left. The oranges look very beautiful, but if there are bruises on the stem or tail, the orange will fall and cannot be harvested.

Customers bring money to buy Xa Doai oranges, the garden owner does not dare to accept

In previous years, at this time, many customers came to Xa Doai orange gardens to deposit money to buy. However, due to the situation of oranges falling, Mr. Tho did not dare to accept deposits from customers.

"Customers come to the garden to pay a deposit, but I don't dare accept it because I'm afraid that the oranges will fall and there won't be any left by Tet. I also don't know how many fruits will be left, so I don't dare accept deposits from customers," Mr. Tho shared.

The Xa Doai orange garden of Mr. Pham Dinh Khang's family (residing in Nghi Dien commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province) also experienced mass orange loss.

According to Mr. Khang’s estimate, the orange garden will yield about 1,000 oranges. However, in the past few months, the orange garden has lost a lot of fruit, now there are only about 400 oranges left on the tree. If the oranges continue to fall, Mr. Khang is worried that by Tet there will be no more oranges left in the garden to sell to customers.

As one of the largest orange gardens in Nghi Dien commune, Mr. Phan Cong Huong's family has more than 400 Xa Doai orange trees that yield a very large harvest every year. However, this year his family suffered a loss.

Mr. Huong said that there has never been a year when oranges have fallen as much as this year. Some trees have lost more than half of their fruit, some have lost up to 90% of their fruit. This year, he did not accept deposits from customers to buy oranges because he was afraid that by Tet there would be no more oranges left.

According to Mr. Huong, oranges fall a lot in years of heavy rain and floods, causing the orange trees to be waterlogged. This year, there was no rain or flood, the orange trees were still green and healthy, and were not affected by pests or diseases, but there was a phenomenon of mass fruit falling. Many experts came to examine it, suspecting it was due to frost.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thiet - an agricultural officer of Nghi Dien commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province said that the whole commune currently grows about 30 hectares of Xa Doai oranges.

Of these, 20 hectares are in two large orange farms, and the remaining 10 hectares are scattered in the home gardens of 50 households. This year, a large number of oranges have fallen, so the output in the commune has decreased sharply.
