The '3Cs' are needed in school psychological counseling.

Why is the role of school psychological counseling particularly important? During a child's upbringing, they may experience physical and emotional trauma. This trauma can originate from family, school, or society at large.

Physical injuries are treated by doctors at the hospital. Severe mental injuries are also treated at specialized hospitals. But what about mild mental injuries, which are quite common?

School psychological counseling at Marie Curie School can be conducted through group activities.

Students aged 11 and above, during puberty, are in a period of significant psychological and physiological change. If their living environment (family, school, etc.) has negative impacts, they may be harmed, and their psychological state will become complex and unpredictable.

According to UNESCO, education has four pillars: "Learning to live together; learning to know; learning to do; and learning to be." Schools should not only teach literacy but also character. Schools have a responsibility to heal the emotional wounds of their students.

Historically, homeroom teachers have had to do many things, including providing psychological counseling to their students. Sometimes they succeed, but often they fail.

In my work as a school administrator, I am very concerned about providing psychological counseling to students. If done well, this can have many positive effects on students' character development and prevent school violence…

Why do we need "3C"?

In 2018, Marie Curie School ( Hanoi ) established a school psychology counseling room at its My Dinh campus, with a permanent staff of 5 officers and employees; a 50 office with all necessary equipment; and annual operating funding.

In 2022, the school established an additional school psychology counseling room at its new Van Phu campus, with a scale similar to the My Dinh campus.

The school's psychological counseling room is organized and operated according to the 3C principle, an abbreviation of the three words "expertise - professionalism - dedication".

Expertise: This requires staff to have in-depth training in psychology in general and educational psychology in particular. Besides professional knowledge, counselors need to possess soft skills such as: listening skills, observation skills, leadership skills, teamwork skills, public speaking skills, memory skills, etc.

At the same time, techniques for mastering emotions, managing time, and problem-solving skills are needed to accurately identify students' problems.

Professionalism: This means that all activities within the department, from preventative measures (minimizing mental health risks that may affect students) to counseling, are appropriately assigned and clearly targeted in the support process. All counseling members must adhere to proper procedures and professional ethics. Counseling results are documented in forms that have been researched, developed, and perfected.

Specialized: refers to a person hired to perform a regular job, whose work and responsibilities are limited to the scope of their assigned duties.

After nearly five years of operation, my school has supported thousands of students and parents, with tens of thousands of counseling sessions (on average, each student/parent needs support five times when experiencing psychological difficulties). The majority of students facing psychological problems proactively seek out the counseling room. This demonstrates the high level of trust students and parents place in the counseling services provided by psychological experts.

The most noticeable results of school psychological counseling are: for the past five years, incidents among students have significantly decreased, almost completely eliminated; a friendly environment has been created; students enjoy coming to school more; and everyone feels happier.
