(HNMNN) - From January 13, 1947 to February 2, 1947, President Ho Chi Minh stayed and worked at the house of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khue, Lai Cai hamlet, Phu Da village (now Phu Da 1), Can Kiem commune, Thach That district. Here, Uncle Ho and other Party leaders discussed and decided on many important policies related to the nation's destiny. Seventy-six years have passed, but the people of Can Kiem still cherish every memory of the beloved Uncle Ho. The house and the artifacts he used are still preserved, becoming a "red address" for propagating and educating about the revolutionary historical traditions in the locality.
CHERISH EVERY MEMENTO
One day in early May, following a small alley paved with laterite stones, we visited the Ho Chi Minh Memorial House – a historical revolutionary site in Lai Cai hamlet, Phu Da 1 village, Can Kiem commune. This is a "red address" of the revolution in Thach That district, attracting a large number of cadres, Party members, people, and especially students from throughout the district to visit, offer incense, and pay tribute to President Ho Chi Minh , thereby learning from and following his thoughts, ethics, and style.
On a hilltop covered in orange-yellow soil, the simple nine-room house and its row of thatched-roof houses, weathered by time, sit atop the highest hill in the area, shaded by magnolia, sapodilla, and jackfruit trees. Many relics used by President Ho Chi Minh during his 19 days of living and working here are preserved, such as his desk and chairs, kerosene lamps, bed, washbasin, water jar, and numerous photographic documents and handwritten notes. These precious relics are carefully preserved by Ms. Nguyen Thi Luy, a fourth-generation descendant of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khue.
According to the book "History of the Can Kiem Commune Party Committee," on the night of January 13, 1947 (the 22nd day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Dog), on his way to the Viet Bac revolutionary base to direct the revolution, President Ho Chi Minh and several Central Committee officials stopped in Can Kiem to stay and work at the house of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khue. This was the longest stop on President Ho Chi Minh's journey from Hanoi to the resistance capital. The house was made of bamboo, with earthen walls and doors made of wild branches... During his stay at Mr. Khue's simple thatched house, President Ho Chi Minh, along with comrades Truong Chinh, Vo Nguyen Giap, Nguyen Luong Bang, Tran Dang Ninh, and others, discussed and decided on many important policies related to the fate of the country, and drafted many documents to guide the resistance...
During his time there, Uncle Ho wrote "New Year's Greetings to the People and Soldiers of Southern Vietnam" (January 24, 1947), "Letter to the Suicide Squads of the Capital" (January 27, 1947), "Letter to the National Guard, Self-Defense Forces, and Militia of the Whole Country"... He also spent time revising old books for reprinting and widespread distribution... On the occasion of the Lunar New Year of the Pig, Uncle Ho presented Mr. Khue's family with a greeting card bearing the four Chinese characters "Happy New Year". On the afternoon of February 2, 1947 (the 12th day of the first lunar month of the Year of the Pig), Uncle Ho left Can Kiem for the Viet Bac war zone.
In a conversation with us, Ms. Nguyen Thi Luy emotionally recounted: "My great-grandfather's family was deeply honored to have welcomed President Ho Chi Minh for 19 days and nights. He stayed and worked in the outermost room on the left of the house. 76 years have passed, but these mementos still feel the warmth of his presence. My children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, along with those of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khue, pledge to continue cherishing and preserving these relics so that they may endure forever."
Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Kiem commune, Nguyen Tuan Chinh, added: "Uncle Ho's stay and work in Can Kiem was a significant historical event, a great honor, forever etched in the golden pages of the local revolutionary struggle tradition. Uncle Ho's affection for Can Kiem commune in particular and Thach That district in general reminds generations of cadres, Party members, and people in the commune to always be united, work together, and strive to build a more prosperous and happy homeland..."
In remembrance of his contributions, in 1974, the Party Committee and people of Can Kiem commune participated in restoring the old house of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khue to serve as the Ho Chi Minh Memorial House. Currently, the nine-room house is still preserved in its original state; the central room is the altar dedicated to President Ho, while the remaining rooms display mementos associated with the time he lived and worked there, including documentary photographs and his handwriting.
I vow to forever follow his example.
Without being told, every citizen of Can Kiem commune respects and always emulates the beloved President Ho Chi Minh. Generations of cadres, Party members, and people of Can Kiem commune have always been united, working together to build a prosperous, beautiful, and civilized homeland, and to build an increasingly clean and strong Party organization. According to Nguyen Huu Hai, Secretary of the Can Kiem Commune Party Committee, in recent years, despite facing difficulties, the Party organization and people of the commune have closely followed the leadership and guidance of all levels, always united, striving to overcome difficulties, and gradually implementing and completing the set goals and targets. The commune's Party committee and government have gradually reformed their working style and methods, focusing on "clear responsibilities, clear tasks, clear quality, and effective work"; concentrating on leading and directing the implementation of key tasks. In particular, the locality focuses on Party building and rectification, concentrating on overcoming limitations, difficulties, and shortcomings, and self-correction...
Thanks to this, in 2022 and the first four months of 2023, the local economy continued to experience significant growth; per capita income in 2022 reached 62.6 million VND/person/year; only 5 households in the commune remained classified as poor, accounting for 0.19%. The commune continued to maintain and improve the 19 national criteria for building new rural areas. From 2021 to the present, the locality has received support from the higher-level budget for investment in practical public works with a total budget of over 273 billion VND; in addition, the people have voluntarily contributed more than 16 billion VND, 974 square meters of land, and over 9,433 man-days of labor to build public welfare facilities, roads, etc.
In Party building work, the Party Committee of Can Kiem commune has gradually improved the quality of activities of Party committees at all levels and Party members within the Party Committee. The implementation of Directive 05-CT/TƯ of the Politburo on promoting the study and emulation of Ho Chi Minh's thought, morality, and style in the commune has become a regular task for the Party committee, government, and the entire political system over the past years. During this process, each Party branch has integrated the basic contents of Ho Chi Minh's thought, morality, and style with the local political tasks, creating momentum for successfully completing the tasks set by the locality. In particular, each Party member in the entire commune Party Committee has always actively cultivated and trained themselves, setting a good example in their work as well as in studying and emulating Ho Chi Minh's thought, morality, and style.
...In May, returning to Can Kiem, my heart was filled with a deep longing for Uncle Ho. The image of him in his simple, rustic thatched house seemed to possess extraordinary power, reminding everyone to strive, work hard, and unite to build a more prosperous and beautiful homeland, worthy of being a resilient revolutionary land, a place that bears the indelible mark of our beloved Uncle Ho.
