"Quishing" is a scam that uses malicious QR codes to redirect users to fake websites, install spyware, or conduct unwanted financial transactions.
Scammers print their own QR codes and paste them over the official QR codes used for payments at restaurants, bus stations, and convenience stores. When users scan the codes to pay, the money is transferred to the scammer's account. Additionally, victims receive emails or messages from fraudulent organizations requesting them to scan QR codes for promotions, cashback, or account updates, but these are actually designed to steal login data and financial information.
Criminals can also use QR codes printed on fake lottery tickets, substandard goods, flyers, etc., to trick users into accessing websites containing viruses or tracking software. Furthermore, after scanning the code, spyware or malware can be silently installed on phones and computers to monitor activity, lock data, and demand ransom.
