Warning about distorted information on textbook approval decisions

VnExpressVnExpress05/12/2023

The Ministry of Education and Training issued a warning after the decision to approve textbooks containing Chinese for grades 3 and 4 was distorted, causing confusion on social networks.

On the evening of December 5, the Ministry of Education and Training announced that it had issued a decision to approve Chinese textbooks for grades 3 and 4, along with a number of other textbooks for use in the 2024-2025 school year.

According to the new general education program (2018 program), Foreign Language is a compulsory subject from grade 3 to grade 12. In addition to English, the list of Foreign Language subjects also includes Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, French, and Russian.

In 2022, the Ministry approved textbooks for grade 3 English, Japanese and French. In December this year, the Ministry approved textbooks for Chinese for grades 3 and 4 and will approve textbooks for the remaining subjects in the coming time.

However, after the decision was issued, information appeared on social networks saying that the Ministry had just removed English from the compulsory subject in the 2025 high school graduation exam and immediately added Chinese to the curriculum for grades 3 and 4.

The Ministry of Education and Training affirmed that these misleading comments caused confusion and negatively affected the policy of reforming the curriculum and textbooks and efforts to teach and learn foreign languages in general schools. The Ministry requested the competent authorities to investigate and handle the above violations.

In addition, when the information spread, many parents wondered whether Chinese was a compulsory subject from grade 3. According to the Ministry's instructions, schools, based on actual conditions and the needs of students and parents, choose one of the above foreign languages to teach.

The Foreign Language program in general education has a duration of 1,155 periods. Of which, primary school has 420 periods (4 periods/week), secondary school has 420 periods (3 periods/week), and in high school, students study 315 periods (3 periods/week).

A representative of the Ministry of Education and Training said that Japanese and Korean are currently taught mainly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, while Chinese is taught in some large cities and border localities.
