In his opening remarks at the workshop, the Director of the Hanoi Department of Construction, Vo Nguyen Phong, stated that construction materials play a crucial role in the development of every country and locality, especially Hanoi. With the increasing rate of urbanization, the demand for construction materials is growing, while traditional materials extracted from natural mineral resources are becoming increasingly limited.
Consequently, the demand for new, recycled, and smart materials suitable for modern architecture to replace traditional building materials is increasing, and these materials are being researched, developed, and used more and more in construction and transportation projects. Therefore, researching, developing, and producing new types of building materials and recycled materials to meet the demand for building materials in the industrialization and urbanization of Hanoi in particular and the whole country in general is extremely important.
"Given its unique characteristics as the capital of the country, the political , economic, cultural, and educational center of the nation, Hanoi possesses certain potential advantages in many fields. However, in the construction materials sector, due to the limited mineral resources and exploitation capabilities of the city, the development of this sector still faces many difficulties in terms of raw material supply," shared Vo Nguyen Phong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Construction.
The Hanoi Department of Construction leadership also stated that many urban development, housing, and transportation projects are currently underway in the city, including a key national project (Ring Road 4). Therefore, the demand for certain materials for these projects is very high, and the local supply cannot be sufficient, especially for loose materials (construction stone, fill soil, leveling sand), which must be imported from neighboring provinces. In the long term, research and development of alternative, green, and sustainable materials are necessary.

At the workshop, Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Building Materials Pham Van Bac shared that the development of Vietnam's building materials industry has been gradually applying scientific and technological advancements, efficiently utilizing resources, protecting the environment, ensuring economic security, proactively integrating internationally, and creating the basic conditions for a green economy with low solid waste and low carbon emissions.
The development of building materials has received greater attention towards sustainable development and environmental protection. In response to the increasing demands for the development of the materials industry in general and the building materials industry in particular, many new products have emerged. These materials are considered advanced solutions to overcome the limitations of traditional materials.
In construction, new types of building materials play a very important role and are widely applied because they have many advantages such as load-bearing capacity, light weight, durability over time, energy saving, etc. These new materials are designed to meet the increasingly high demands of modern life.
"Therefore, it is playing an increasingly important role in the development and innovation of many areas of life, contributing to building a more comfortable and sustainable society," - Pham Van Bac, Vice President of the Vietnam Building Materials Association, observed.
Within the framework of the workshop program, the Hanoi Department of Construction, in coordination with building materials manufacturers and suppliers, organized an exhibition area to introduce some new building materials and recycled building materials that have been researched, developed, and used in the past.
