From a flower familiar to Vietnamese people, female student Nguyen Thi Mai Huong (student of class 47, Can Tho University) has researched and transformed lotus flowers into many products that have received high appreciation at startup competitions.
From dream to reality
Growing up with the vast lotus fields in My An town, Thap Muoi district (Dong Thap province), Mai Huong has long had a special affection for this flower. It is this love for lotus and her passion for exploration and learning that has prompted Mai Huong to research products made from lotus.
Mai Huong has been nurturing the idea of starting a business since she was in high school. When she entered university, Mai Huong confidently realized her dream of starting a business with products extracted from lotus.
"When starting the projects, I encountered many difficulties. From researching and making the product to adjusting the appropriate proportions. When faced with difficulties, I always try my best to overcome them. At the same time, I use them as inspiration and motivation to excel in the future" - Mai Huong said.
Accompanying Mai Huong through two consecutive start-up projects, Mr. Nguyen Van Nhieu Em (lecturer of Sociology, Can Tho University) highly appreciated this student's spirit of eagerness to learn, research and determination to overcome difficulties.
"Through the process of working with Mai Huong on 2 projects, I highly appreciate her ideas and acumen. As a mentor, I only suggest that Mai Huong develop her ability to explore and discover on her own" - Mr. Nhieu Em shared.
At the "Potential Startup Project" contest for students of Can Tho University in 2022, Mai Huong won first prize with a set of lotus-based disinfectant products. Next, the lotus-based scented candle project also helped Mai Huong win second prize in the "Search for innovative startup talents in Can Tho City in 2022" contest.
Or most recently, the lotus seed mask product helped Mai Huong win second prize in the "Potential Startup Project" Contest for students of Can Tho University in 2023.
Receiving recognition in startup competitions is the motivation for Mai Huong to continue to explore and research new products in the future.
Developing indigenous natural resources
Products from the startup project have brought income to Mai Huong since she was still in school. However, Huong's biggest wish when starting a business is to take advantage of local natural resources to contribute to the economic development of her home province.
"Growing up in the difficult land of Thap Muoi pink lotus, the love and awareness of the value that lotus brings to the province has urged me to explore, create and be determined to research lotus products" - Mai Huong added.
With that motivation, Mai Huong has researched and created many products extracted from lotus such as: soap, disinfectant, hand sanitizer, scented candles, scented wax, masks,... all of which are environmentally friendly and trusted by many people.
Currently, Mai Huong’s products are all tested and registered for intellectual property rights. In particular, Huong pays great attention to packaging to increase the appeal of the products.
With her current success, Mai Huong always appreciates her own efforts and the support of her teachers. Huong said that in the future, she will continue to research and develop more lotus products to bring to everyone.
